A very special Chula graduation

A commencement ceremony is not just a big deal for Thai university students, but also for their families, as it marks the success of both parents and their children.

Unfortunately, recent graduate Asama Pookkho won’t be able to join her friends on their commencement day at Chulalongkorn University in October due to her ongoing battle with cancer.

Miss Pookkho was being hospitalised in her home province, Prachinburi, when she received news from Chulalongkorn that they knew about her situation and wanted to grant her the certificate earlier.

On Sunday, Miss Pookkho wore her graduation gown and received the certificate from the university’s chancellor, Professor Bundit Auephakorn, while she was at a hospital with her parents by her side.

She took her bachelor’s degree in Education.

The chancellor later revealed that after the university had passed Miss Pookkho’s story to the palace, and that Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the King’s younger sister, ordered him and his team to hand out the certificate to the new graduate at the hospital.

In Thailand, it is a tradition for recent graduates to receive their degrees from the members of the royal family as it’s seen as the highest honour in one’s life.

This is such a heartwarming story and we wish Miss Pookkho and her family all the best.
