Former Thai airman volunteers to help Ukrainians defend their country


On 1st March 2022, Chanapong, a former airman with the Royal Thai Airforce, was spotted turning up at the Ukrainian Embassy in Bangkok to enlist in Ukraine’s International Legion.

The former airman revealed that he wants to help Ukrainians fight against Russia’s invasion. “I want the Ukrainian people to know that they are not alone. If they ask for help, I’m willing to answer.”, said Chanapong in an interview with Coconuts Bangkok.

Chanapong also furthered that he didn’t volunteer to fight alongside Ukrainians as a Thai citizen. He was there as a “human being”.

After seeing videos of Ukraine being under attack, Chanapong said that the video hit him right in the feels. The story of children hurt in the crisis also made him decide to fight for the Ukraine’s democracy.

Chanapong’s story was also tweeted on a Twitter account, @Gap.14ขุนพล, which became viral and amassed over 2,770 retweets.

After the story was circulated online, many netizens were inspired to join the Ukraine International Legion as well.
