Crystal Jade has many outlets in Singapore, with a slight variation of names depending on its speciality. Their newly renovated outlet at Jurong Point, located at the JP1. Saw their promotional set meal on their menu and decided to try that out.
At S$9.80 nett, you get to choose one dim sum item, la mian and a glass of drink. That is a reasonable price considering that it is Crystal Jade we are talking about here. I ordered two sets, the steamed xiao long bao and their barbeque pork bun for the dim sum. The steamed dumplings (4 pieces) were good; it has slightly more filling compared to the other restaurants. Though incomparable to the best I tasted. The barbeque pork bun (2 pieces) was slightly disappointing. I felt that the filling was a little too sweet and it did not leave me craving for more after the first two bites or so.
For the main course, choose from five types of la mian. I choose the one with steamed pork and vegetable wanton and the other with minced pork and mushroom. The former is soupy and the soup was not as rich, however the wanton were well-made. The minced pork and mushroom la mian was slightly spicy and not too bad, except I did not spot any mushrooms.
Choose from three types of drinks, non-refillable as stated on the menu. I choose the barley. You can choose from hot or cold. It was a little sweet initially but when the ice melted, it was okay. Do note that this promotion is only available from 3 – 5.30 P.M. on weekdays. Although the prices stated are nett prices, do also note that they charge for the serviettes used. Otherwise, it was a rather filling meal for about S$10 per head at Crystal Jade.
If you're looking for affordable cantonese food, crystal jade is your answer. Personally, though, I am not a fan of crystal jade because I'd rather pay more for better food. The food at Crystal Jade is only average without any wow factor. The xiao long baos are relatively tasty but not the best I've eaten.
I am, however, a HUGE fan of crystal jade my bread. My favourite would be the char siew bolo bun.
I have a sweet tooth and the char siew bolo bun is well, sweet! It is more sweet than it is salty. Even the char siew is sweet. It is the best bolo bun I've tried in all of Singapore and I would suggest you bring it home and heat it up before devouring it although I can totally understand the pain of not being able to eat it right away.
Oh well, good things are worth the wait!
Crystal Jade ( La mian ) is my all time favorite Chinese restaurant! Although it gets a bit confusing because there are so many different version to Crystal Jade restaurants. ( La mian, xiao long pau ). So I remember my favorite store by it's location. ( The branch at Holland Village, after you exit from the MRT's underpass).
While I'm dining there, I always have the same noodle. ( I forgot the name because I haven't dine there for a while). But it had a blend of sweet mushroom sauce. The noodle is sweet and I like to spice it up by adding the fried chili provided on the table. My 2nd most favorite would be the Si Chuan style noodle. ( The one with steamed chicken, dry). Being a chili lover, this dish is perfect for me. It hits every chili craving I'm having.
While you're there, make sure you order their Xiao Long Pau. For the price of $4, you get 5 little paus. Their price range is also acceptable. ( About $8.90 per dish and their serving size is HUGE)!
The title says it all; I love crystal jade buo luo buns! It is difficult to find great buo luo buns with authentic Hong Kong flavours in Singapore. Although buo luo buns can be found easily in most bakery but none of them can match up to the standards of crystal jade’s. The smell of butter is strong yet not sickening when you take your first bite. I love how the crust on the top of bun always melts in my mouth. A tip for all: Eat the bun with a cup of hot milk tea and you can almost feel like you are back in Hong Kong!

I have never fan of buns, but I must say that the Bo Lo Bun that they are famous for tastes really delicious. They have one that is plain (without filling) and another with char siew filling. It is crispy on the exterior, soft on the inside, and just very fragrant. For those who do not have a sweet tooth like me, you might want to try their water chestnut agar agar -- a mildly-flavoured jelly with crunchy bits of water chestnut. Other recommendations include: Egg White Tart(perfect for those with high cholesterol levels) and Yam Bread (a healthier alternative to kaya or butter).
The best part about the bakery is that after 8.30pm, there is a storewide discount on all confectionery -- 20% off all buns, 30% off small cakes and 40% off whole cakes. Definitely worth the buy!
Crystal Jade is synonymous with affordable but quality dining. Unfortunately, Crystal Jade Kitchen in Parkway Parade seems to be a black sheep in the family. Don’t count on getting your food hot when you’re there: batches of some dim sum are made in the morning and served for lunch. During my last visit, the staff made no apologies that my baked char siew pastries were not fresh from the oven. But what really got my goat was their refusal to even use a microwave to heat up the pastries. Fortunately they had the decency not to charge me for them…
Crystal Jade is widely know for its affordable Cantonese cuisine. They also have a lot of subsidary outlets like the Xiao Long Bao and Steamboat Buffet, Korean BBQ and even a bakery!
They are perhaps most famous for their Xiao Long Bao (pork dumplings with rich broth). The broth of the dumplings is very tasty and the meat is savoury too. If you are not careful, you may break a 'hole' in the dumpling, causing all the soup to ooze out. My suggestion is to place the dumpling on a spoon, bite off a bit of the skin and drink up most of the broth, then enjoy the meat. Do this slowly though--you may burn your tongue.
Other dishes that I love at their main restaurant outlet are their Prawn Paste Chicken Wings and Fried Squid. Although the chicken wings tend to be a bit oily, I think that is the best way to enjoy fried chicken wings in general. The batter goes very well with the chicken wing and is very crispy. The fried squid (you can indicate whether you want the wing or the legs) is sprinkled with a bit of salt and pepper, adding flavour to the light batter it is fried in.
Whenever we hear about Crystal Jade what instantly comes to mind is the la mian and xiao long bao that they are famous for but what most of us don’t know is that the fried rice at Crystal Jade is definitely worth trying as well. Of all the different types of fried rice, there is a special item called Hokkien Fried Rice which is not even on the menu and which you have to specially ask for. Once I have tried it, it became a staple whenever I frequent one of Crystal Jade restaurants.
For one, Hokkien Fried Rice is different from other types of fried rice because it is topped with delicious seafood vegetable medley gravy, a bit like mui fan. So for those of us who only like dry fried rice, this is not something that you would go for. It also has egg, diced prawns, chicken and kailan stem in it, all the essentials of fried rice, making this my all time favorite comfort food. Personally I find that it tastes best with the sour and spicy soup!
My recommended place if you are looking for quality Chinese food. Crystal Jade has many branches and they are divided into the type of food that they sell. My favorite one would be the La Mian Xiao Long Bao outlet at Holland Village which offers steamboat buffet as well!
The la mian is bouncy and springy and the quantity is HUGE. I cannot finish a bowl by myself and with the generous meat-stuffed dumplings, I can barely go through 3/4 a bowl. If you are going with a girl friend, then I would advise you to share it with her. The soup is light and tasty, nothing too overpowering. The star would be the steamboat buffet. *Tip*: Do call and book in advance to avoid disappointment as the buffet is really popular and due to the limited seats, they are often snapped up quick! Be prepared to wait up to 5 days for your seats in busy periods.
The steamboat broth is good for value, at below $30 after taxes, you get free-flow XLBs, unlimited selection of meat and two types of broths of your choice. Highly recommend the pork broth with corn. So, so sweet. The free flow of XLBs will make any avid XLB fan happy. At $6.50 per basket, the buffet is definitely worth it. The complimentary prawns are also very fresh and juicy! I cannot recommend this enough and the I believe the free-flow XLBs are enough to entice you to take the phone and book your first or next Crystal Jade XLB buffet.
Crystal Jade has many outlets in Singapore and cater to different taste preferences of Singaporeans at that. There are outlets which sell Korean food, dim sum, la mian (ramen) and zi char style of food. I tried before the outlet at Toa Payoh in the morning for its dim sum breakfast. For a night owl like me to wake up at 9am to set off from my house just to have breakfast, you know the dim sum must be enticing enough to seduce me out of my bed! I loved the char siew pastry, egg tarts, beancurd wrapped shrimps, fried wantons and the mango pudding! The mango pudding is self-made I think, and is much better than the mango puddings you ordered outside as they are mass ordered from somewhere if I am not wrong.
La mian (ramen) and the xiao long baos (pork dumplings) at the outlet at Ngee Ann City are quite scrumptious too! I will always go with my prawn dumplings la mian and share the xiao long baos with my friends. The xiao long baos are not only soupy, they are also juicy and quite huge! It is slightly cheaper than Din Tai Feng's xiao long baos and is almost comparable. My friends love the fried sauce noodles as it is quite spicy, which suits their tastebuds. The Crystal Jade Kitchen which sells zi char style of food is quite commendable too! One dish that you must have is the Kung Pao Chicken with cashew nuts in it. It is tangy, not too spicy and chewy. Even though it is more expensive than the zi char at hawker centres, the quality is much better and you can dine in comfort of air con. Thus, I am quite a fan of Crystal Jade. It is quite admirable for opening different outlets that carry different types of cuisine but yet still managed to make their food appetizing to all.
