Lawry's has been around for many years but somehow, I never found the chance to patronise it till this year when a friend suggested the restaurant to celebrate a birthday.
I wasn't sure if it was a coincidence or what, but there were at least 6-7 birthday celebrations in the restaurant on the day we went. Each time, the restaurant staff would bring out a cake with a candle for the birthday boy/girl at a particular table and the group of staff would break out singing the 'Happy Birthday' song loudly. While it was a nice gesture on the restaurant's part, it was very disruptive having to see and hear the same sequence being played out so many times within a night. Perhaps it was because I had expected a fine dining experience with a quiet ambience for the kind of prices we paid.
Each table seemed to have one assigned serving staff. The serving staff we had was polite but due to the noisy environment, we couldn't quite make out what she was saying to us half the time.
While the food wasn't bad, it wasn't something that wowed me either. Would I go back again? Probably not.
I hardly ever give a rating of 5. But Lawry's is truly deserving of 5 stars! I brought my partner, who is a steak lover to Lawry's for his birthday dinner and it was the best decision ever. I had been searching online for the best steak in Singapore and everyone had mixed reviews. So, I had to take a plunge and try my luck.
The service at Lawry's is top notch. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive. They even took a photo of us presented the photo in a photo card to us. The ambience is very quiet, romantic and classy. Exactly the kind of ambience we enjoy. We ordered the prime as well as the Lawry's cut. Both of which were excellent choices. The meat was so tender and soft it literally melts in our mouth. Not only did they perfect their meats, the salad and sides were outstanding too. I enjoyed my yorkshire pudding very much too.
Lawry's has now become out number 1 place for dinners on special occasions. The price was slightly steep but for special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries, and plus, their excellent service and remarkable food, I am more than willing to splurge a little more.
If you're a steak lover, you simply have to try Lawry's, as it's definitely one of the best steakhouses in Singapore. The prices may be steep, so if that's holding you back, just look out for the one-for-one credit card promotions.
The chef carves the steak right next to your table upon your order. I usually order medium or medium rare, which gives me a very tender, juicy, and flavourful steak. Goes excellently with the mashed potatoes and Yorkshire pudding!
It's not just the steak that's exceptionally delicious at Lawry's. The simple mashed potato dish is amazing, and the best I've ever tasted. The various side dishes available are also worth a try. My favourites are the creamed spinach and the mushroom, very impressive.
The service is also flawless, with a server assigned to your table to ensure that your dining experience goes well.
This is one fine dining restaurant. I was taken aback when my friend brought me in for a treat, celebrating a special occasion because I clearly wouldn't be able to afford it and thought so for him.
Thankfully, they had this promotion that was going on for a 6 course meal (I can't remember the price ): ) thus it was less taxing on my friend. Most of the dishes were served in really small portions, sufficient for me but for anyone with a big appetite, it might not be enough. Such is fine dining though, haha!
They also prepare your food right by the table, well most of them anyway. It was an eye-opener for me because I don't see such demonstrations nor treat myself to lavish meals often. Staff are also personally assigned to your table to meet your every request! It's a once-in-a-while indulgence for me to visit Lawry's!
Lawry's steakhouse stands head and shoulders above the competition. I'll try my best not to oversell Lawry's, but its my absolute favourite steakhouse in Singapore.
The first time I ate, I ordered their standard cut, medium rare of course. At first glance, it doesn't look terribly appetising. That all changed on the first bite. I don't want to imagine the expression on my face from the pure ecstasy of the flavor in the beef.
What truly separates Lawry's from the rest are its sides, called "Accomodations" there. The steak comes with Idaho mashed potatoes on the side, and goes perfectly. I also highly recommend ordering the Yorkshire pudding, which is actually pastry that goes brilliantly with your steak. The wide array of horseradish, English/French Mustard, and their house-brand salt and pepper go great too.
The steak was good but not extraordinary, or maybe I had too high expectations for this 'atas steak house'. The service was impeccable like most atas places, with someone specially attending to us.
The salad was done by one of the waiters/chefs in front of us and he spun it in an ice bowl. Quite a sight for us that day. Afterwards, the chef came with the steak and asked how we liked our steak to be done. I ordered Medium - which i regretted. (Always order MEDIUM RARE at atas places because chefs pay more attention to them!) The steak was good and the portion was really big (I couldn't finish it!)
A good place to celebrate an occasion.
The most vivid thing of eating at Lawry's was how full I was coming out of the restaurant. They have really great dinner set meals, which is slightly expensive, but worth the money. I really enjoyed the beef and felt that it was cooked to perfection. The sides were also really tasty. To top it all off, we had cake with a delicious scoop of ice cream at the end of our meal.
Overall, it was a very satisfying meal and I was pleased with the warm and friendly staff that immediately greeted us. I would most definitely recommend beef lovers to give this place a shot, despite its prices!
My partner suggested to have dinner at Lawry's to celebrate our anniversary, and he went ahead to make reservations. I was not too keen on the idea as it is a little on the pricey side, but I have to say I was impressed with their culinary skills and I fell in love with their meat, even if I wasn't a fan of their signature spinning salad. (That's because I don't eat vegetables.) I ordered filet mignon, and it was so juicy and succulent I regretted not ordering a bigger piece. My partner had the English cut, and I regretted not ordering that as well after stealing a few bites of it!
We tried their pan seared scallops, and while it was definitely tasty, I would not order it again when we go back to Lawry's. I have eaten scallops just as delicious as theirs and for a fraction of the price too. ($19 for 3 measly pieces.)
At the end of the dinner, they presented us with a complimentary dessert, took a photo of us using their camera, printed and put it in a frame, just for our anniversary. Thumbs up for that.
I would say that Lawry's the prime rib is another steak restaurant that you should try. I remembered going there during one of the weekends and found the place to be crowded. Had to wait for about 10-15 minutes before I got seated and yeah, I thought that I should have made advanced reservation. But overall, not too bad because while waiting in queue, the staffs passed me the menu to browse. The restaurant was classy, kept simple with wooden furnitures and a very cool and quite ambience.
Once I was seated, I ordered cream of mushroom as appetizer, followed by the prime rib as the main course and also had Tiramisu as my dessert. The staff who took my order was friendly, she also serve me a complimentary bread and that really goes well with my cream of mushroom. The cream of mushroom is cooked just nice, not too concentrated nor diluted and the mushroom aroma is so strong.
Next, here it comes the Prime rib, the meat is tender and succulent, it is well roasted to medium rare and I could see the pinky flesh with juices oozing out. I dipped the meat in chilly sauce and I was good to go. It was spicy, tender and meaty.
And the tiramisu is great. Cold, spongy and soft with a slight touch of wine that you can taste at every bite. In total, it costs me around $120-$130 per person that day. Definitely would come back WITH reservation.
One of the prime locations to have ribs, it definitely lives up to its reputation. The fine art of cooking ribs to its perfection is one that not many places can master. Upon comparison, the food quality and standard at this particular place is by no means near any of the random ordinary restaurants that serve their so called "ribs".
The place is a little on the high-fine dining side, so be sure to dress appropriately when having a meal at the restaurant. The restaurant has a fine ambiance which brings out the elegance of the place, as it over looks orchard road. The waiters and waitresses are all well dressed up in uniforms that makes it seem like a place in the early 60s, probably an english restaurant or some sort. I particularly like how they provide such excellent service for the premium price that the food is being charged for. The food is also served promptly, which is a plus for the starving stomachs.
There is also a vast wine selection to go along with the ribs, or in cases when ribs are not exactly one of fancy there are also other selections in the menu like steak or chicken to have as the main course. As a wise man once said wine is the best drink to go with red meat because it helps enhance the flavour. Do be sure not to miss out on the fine wine while indulging in the absolutely gorgeous ribs that this place serves.
