I would probably have given this review a rating of 5 a few years back - I was an absolute fan of MediaCorp back then, going as far as to even pick up the phone to dial numbers for my favourite actresses. However, times have definitely changed, and as much as I hate to admit it, MediaCorp is definitely on the decline, and I hardly ever watch the channels from MediaCorp unless I'm really bored, or some new drama has captured my fancy.

MediaCorp attempts to keep up with the times by constantly churning out replicas of gameshows from other countries like America or Japan. However, what this only manages to achieve is make the company look like a complete poseur as those gameshows are usually a flop when it comes to local context, and it can get quite tiring to constantly see those shows on repeat.

Furthermore, with MediaCorp's tight industry of actors and actresses, it's getting quite a bore to constantly see the same few faces on various dramas. In fact, it's hardly surprising to see Jeanette Aw acting in a 7pm drama, only to see her lovely face once more during the 9pm one.

With the introduction of Cable TV into my home, MediaCorp channels have definitely taken a back seat. However, I still flick through Channel 5, Channel 8 and Channel U on occasion when I'm bored, and looking for some local humour. Locals shouldn't be too quick to diss MediaCorp though. Although the media company is on the decline, some of the TV productions are definitely better than certain Hong Kong dramas on Cable TV, and it's always refreshing to watch some local satire!

Creativity level decreasing...

I appreciate having MediaCorp in Singapore because it provides me with local entertainment, from radio to television. My favourite station, 987FM, is under MediaCorp, and I am a regular viewer of local Chinese dramas on Channel 8 (because my sister loves to watch them and I have no choice but to watch as well).

The only thing I have against MediaCorp is that their local dramas are getting more and more typical and predictable, and nowadays, it's as if the story of one drama is recycled and adjusted slightly before being turned into a new show. The scriptwriters at MediaCorp seriously need to start using more creativity in their stories and find something new before every plot in the future becomes stale and boring.

Also, it's a terrible idea to reuse the same rising stars a couple of times in a row. It can get sickening watching the same actors over and over, especially if they are new, they only end up becoming overrated. I mean, it's great that they are getting exposure and all, but please spread their appearances out evenly....

Alright, all the negatives aside, MediaCorp is still something Singaporeans should be proud of, because it is such a successful company. Some of the dramas air beyond Singapore, which is pretty cool to me. I will keep on supporting MediaCorp, with hopes that the script of the dramas will get better over the years, and not get more and more similar!

You might not know this, but Mediacorp also have a publications arm. The likes of FHM, Style Men, and 8 Days are products of this media conglomerate. Although no SPH, I feel that they have done remarkable well in crafting a market for themselves.

But then again, their true strength lies in the field of radio and television. Broadcast media is their forte, as practically every radio station lies in their hands. 987fm, Class 95FM, YES 933, all of those money-spinners belong to Mediacorp. I enjoy their products - as limited as Singapore is in terms of media production, they have done their best to keep things fresh and exciting, and I respect them for it.

One of two main media powers in Singapore, and growing stronger day by day.
