Being the densest, tallest residential building in Singapore upon its completion in 1976, Pearl Bank Apartments was one of the pioneering high rise residential buildings in Singapore as the government then tried to get Singapore's wealthy to favour luxury high rise living instead of private property as part of a scheme to solve Singapore's land shortage problem. Recently, it has been proposed to be gazetted as a national monument due to its iconic significance to Singapore's real estate history.
