For the entirety of my childhood.

Choa Chu Kang's library used to have a colorful children reading corner and it made the whole place look so lively and exciting that as a kid, I'd be extra happy coming here. The library was a place with books spilling magic and I am thankful that it's still standing strong.

It is with great thanks to NLB that my interest in reading grew exponentially and without my trust NLB card, I would have bankrupted my family a long time ago. I have spent so much of my life in this library, pre and post renovation, that the books here all feel like home.

A great place to check out that old book people keep talking about or to wait excitedly for a new magazine issue.

I absolutely love going to the library. Regardless of which branch I go to, there will always be an existing musty smell in each library - the smell of books, and though it may not be any perfumed delight, I personally love this smell because it reminds me of homeliness and warmth.

Somehow I always find myself trapped in the library due to a heavy rain, and even after the rain stops, I'll still be seated comfortably with my book, too engrossed to even move.

NLB houses an extensive range of books. They offer books in all four national languages - Chinese, Tamil, Malay and English, and in various genres, so there's bound to be a book for everyone.

The libraries also provide comfortable seating for customers. There are plush armchairs lined with thick cushion for readers to simply rest and relax while they enjoy their books. Also, the staff tries their best to keep the atmosphere of the library peaceful and silent.

The borrowing systems are updated very often, in order to provide customers with greater ease when checking out their books, and the borrowing limit has even been upped to 6 books per person!

An amazing place, truly!

I like the library a lot. It has a large collection of books and a lot of books are very new. I think that I contributed to at least a few of the new books. You see, I am one of those people that caused the library to increase its fine for late return of books from 5 cents to 15 cents per day.

The best part is that the library will sometimes give "promotion", so instead of borrowing 4 books, you can borrow 8 books. I have 5 library cards for my family so I can borrow up to 40 books when the promotion is on. Imagine if I borrow 40 books and forget to return all the books for just one day, I will be paying $6 fine. The library does provide service to send out email and SMS reminders but I am still paying fines so I must really find out where is the problem.

I love reading. As Mr Twain said so brilliantly, "good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life." Not everyone can afford a novel, but the NLB provides a platform for everyone to learn and read at great convenience.

Name it, and I bet that your resident library either has it, or can direct you to a branch that stocks it. From sports autobiographies to comic books to Great American Novels, there is a wide range of reading material available for your perusal. I used to go to the library once a week to borrow books for the reading periods in school. Needless to say, I enjoyed a rather memorable childhood.

In my opinion, it is the most underrated modern facility available for everyone. I say, if you haven't been to the library, perhaps it is time for you to pay your resident NLB branch a visit.

Home away from home.

Being an avid reader, it is no wonder why I would love the NLB. With rows upon rows of well selected books, it promises paradise, guaranteeing readers hours upon hours of the most exquisite pleasure, lost in a fantastical world concocted by the most talented authors.

I have been visiting NLB ever since I was a child. I frequent the library located at Bedok, one of the largest ones in Singapore if I'm not mistaken. It has three levels, the third one holding books full of mystical creatures and fantasy worlds for kids, the second one being some sort of a study area and holding books filled with information on really interesting topics, and the first floor holding YA novels, angsty teen fiction and adult books, with a corner for non-fiction.

I remember borrowing a book on graphology from the second floor once. It captivated my interest and was absolutely fascinating. Now graphology isn't a very conventional study and well, I suppose it's only for people who are bored and have nothing to do like me. That the library actually stocks these sort of books in addition to the more traditional ones on arts and craft etcetera is impressive. I also managed to borrow a very scientifically based book on the paranormal and supernatural occurrences, which was equally enthralling. I was all but hypnotised by it, and that was probably the first non-fiction book that I had genuine interest in.

The first storey though, is my personal paradise. Filled with books catering to the teenage and adult crowd, I have spent many an afternoon frolicking through the bookshelves and flipping through books. It is so difficult to choose between the dozens of interesting books there, and I often find myself in a dilemma of the worst sort, wondering which of the novels I have to give up.

The newly revamped and improved borrowing system is also a great addition to the national library. It saves us the hassle of having to place our books one by one on the borrowing pad. Now you can just dump all your books on it and be done! In today's society that worships speed and efficiency, this is definitely a great timesaver and superb improvement.

In conclusion, I really love NLB and it will be part of my life for many years to come.

Arguably the best public service in Singapore.

The large variety of books and easy accessibility need not be mentioned, but the many activities that the NLB hosts to promote reading etc. - these are definitely praise-worthy.

As a student, the large amount of print materials available as research sources are deeply appreciated. I also remember spending time with my family in the library as a child, before it became a place I frequent for a conducive studying environment.

It is truly a place that has seen me through all sorts of things. Will definitely continue going to the library!

Go to the National Library at 100 Victoria Street. Book yourself in!

What a wonderful library. All thirteen floors are efficiently and well stocked and staffed. The Asian collection on three upper floors is amazing. Access to rare documents is relatively easy with efficient service available to provide you with the document or information you requite for your research (or reading pleasure).

Not only is it a library: it is a cultural centre. The excellent theatre hosts musicals, plays and concerts. There are gardens and pools on various levels. The circular pod on the very top of the building provides magnificent vistas of Singapore.

But the real treasures are the books. This is a world-class library. It could hold its head high in any city, anywhere. Is it a tourist destination? Only if you needed a cool place to relax and unwind with a good book.

But don’t get upset. The main library in Bugis is but one. In addition to the excellent service provided by the National Library itself the regional libraries throughout Singapore are almost like a cohesive whole, offering efficient and pleasant assistance.

It is a pleasure to visit each and every one of Singapore's libraries, and the National Library is exceptional.

I take this building as the brain of Singapore education. There are so many reference books available that are so helpful and difficult to find because of their limitedness or the nature of the book (year published, popularity).

Though we are not allowed to take the reference books home, it is not such a big deal as there are ample chairs and tables offered in each level for comfortable reading and cross referencing. It has indeed helped me a lot in my researches for school purposes. We are allowed to photocopy a certain percentage of the books (Make sure you do not plagiarize) and that is one value-adding feature for me.

The librarians are extremely helpful and the conduciveness of the environment is high.

A focal point in my childhood were my visits to the various NLB's various National Libraries across the island. I grew up reading hundreds of books from them and I still do.

Till today, I still visit the library frequently,. Although there are some community libraries that i find small, there are others that satisfy my quest to find the right books. their excellent reservation system always allows me to reserve any book I want and to pick it up at my own convenience.

I feel that the libraries should stop children from playing of talking too loudly, as I see this on the rise. Perhaps some measures can be taken before this gets out of hand.
