When reviewing eating places most of us tend to look out for the quality of the food only. But for hawker centres, I think one other important factor, often overlooked, is that of the number of stalls open at a given time. On this note, I must say that Old Airport seems to always have a large number of stalls open, even if the crowd is thin. As a result you can find good food even when it isn't lunch or dinner time.

Old Airport hawker centre is also fairly large, and thankfully its variety matches up to its size. You can get turtle soup, prawn noodles, goreng pisang, and rojak, to name but a few. And there are a good handful of famous stalls too! Most of these popular hawkers are located in the front row, facing the road.

Expect huge crowds at dinner times and on weekends. The lunch crowd is still manageable, probably due to the absence of office buildings in the immediate vicinity.

This hawker at old airport road is considered one of the best hawkers in Singapore. Last year was a good year for its popularity gained a new level after the outburst of “lao ban tao huay” trend. Adding on to that, Dakota MRT was finally completed last year, making the hawker MUCH more accessible than before. For the benefit of those who doesn’t drive, to get to the hawker, simply take the circle line to Dakota Mrt. The hawker is just a 5 minutes’ walk away from the MRT station.

Though many people have told me to go in the afternoons if I want to avoid the massive crowd in the evenings, I prefer not to do so. Reason being, you risk having most of the popular stalls closed! I don’t remember the names of most stalls however; usually the long queues and certificates will suggest that they are pretty popular. The must orders in this hawker: Rojak, Carrot Cake, Hokkien Mee, Lao Ban, prawn noodles. Avoid the zi char stalls there as they are usually half past six.

Great variety of local delights

Besides having a wide variety of local delights at affordable prices, another plus point of Old Airport Road Food Centre is how conveniently it is located. Just under a 10 minutes walk away is Dakota Circle Line and that is also one factor that will bring me back to the place again and again.

Lots of famous food stalls can be found here and you will be spoilt for choice once you step in. It is usually very crowded and getting a table can be quite difficult. They have outdoor seating areas too but it can be quite warm sitting outside under the scorching sun during the day.

The more famous stalls would be Lao Ban bean curd, which is a current fad. You will often see people buying 10 bowls at a go. Other stalls worth trying are the prawn noodles, wanton mee (this is stall facing the entrance; there is usually a queue for this), lor mee, kuay chap and a whole lot of other famous local dishes. I recently patronized a Western stall called "London Grill" and liked the food quite a lot. The chicken chop that I ordered was tender and succulent and came in a big portion.

Considering how conveniently located this hawker is and how much good food it houses, this is a definite must go for food lovers.

Tao huay!!

No one can think about Old Airport Road Food Centre without thinking about the famous Lao Ban and 51 Beancurd - Indeed, I go there solely to buy them. They are quite unlike the normal beancurd sold at most places, and that is the attraction. They even come in unusual flavours like strawberry, durian and almond. So far, the almond and regular flavours are the more popular ones. I urge you to try the beancurd there; you'll never want to stop eating it!

Of course, they sell all sorts of other local fare there like Hokkien Mee and Char Kway Teow, and while they are definitely delicious, I would not say that they are exceptional.

Be prepared to queue though!

Rush Hour

15min away from town, this old-school market is still doing as well as it did back in the flagship days of enacting multi-storey food centres.

Easy access via public or private transport means, office people flock over for their favourite bowl of prawn noodles and sugar cane towers not only for their wonderful taste but their value for money. Several carparks around, so it'd be worth it to carpool over for an hour of lunch. However, there is no real need to drive over with the new MRT just a stone's throw away.

Office people, if you intend to head there with your buddies in a group of more than 5, you'll be in for a long long wait for seats. On top of being greeted with packets of tissue reserving seats, you'll find yourselves having to finish your meal with eager eyes eyeing your seat. As if it isn't awkward enough eating with colleagues.

I highly recommend their seafood and prawn noodles. I'm pretty sure they have a famous turtle soup around here somewhere. Vast variety, wonderful choices. If it's not too crowded and you're not in a rush, take your time to pick. If not, have an idea of what you're eating for lunch and rush to that stall the minute you arrive.
