Established in 1991, 1A Crispy Puffs had a humble beginning, operating on weekends from a stall in Eunos Crescent, Singapore. Inspired by the intricate layering found on seashells, 1A Crispy Puffs founder, Mr Ow Soon Pooh incorporated this unique design into the curry puff, creating the ultimate crispy curry puff with its delectable curry filling and delicate flakes of crust.
My favourite puff, however, is the yam puff. The filling has just the right amount of sweetness so it isn't sickening. What's not to love about a sweet sweet filling encased in a warm soft shell? This is definitely not a brand that has given itself to mindless mass-production, at least not yet.
However, I feel that their chilli crab flavour need to be improved. I was hugely disappointed when I bit into the puff and found out that their "crab" was imitation crab meat, and it didn't taste at all like chilli crab! Perhaps if they called it the Crab stick flavour I would be more pleased.
All in all, their pastry is a winner in this industry in my honest opinion, I can't wait to get more of it but I have to take care of my waistline!
In addition, their puffs are always served warm and crispy without fail. They should have named their brand 'A1' instead of '1A'! Besides my all-time favourite, curry puff, I enjoy their sardine puffs as well.
These puffs are best eaten on the spot and not reheated or kept for a while as they do not taste as good reheated or cold. As the puffs are hand-made in store, if you are unlucky, you might have the misfortune of getting an over-thick puff, which isn't such a common occurrence. Always insist on getting a piping hot puff and it will never fail to delight you in all the ways possible.
Have a few pieces of tissue on hand as it's gonna get MESSY!
However, 1A sell durian puffs, which is pretty good and I would like to recommend to people who are durian lovers. It is fragrant and smooth. People like me who don’t like durian might love this.
If you do not want to eat uncomfortably, remember to prepare tissue before you start to enjoy.
Other than that, 1A curry puffs are best eaten when fresh from the oven. The ingredients are freshly baked and the crust is still soft and crispy. It is absolutely delectable – crispy skin on the outside, warm and soft ingredients inside.
That having said, I think 1A curry puffs might lose out to that of Old Chang Kee’s curry puffs, in terms of tastiness. Old Chang Kee’s curry puffs have a crispy crust, yet a thick layer of chewy skin to protect its freshly baked potato cubes and slices of chicken. I’d prefer chewy skin over crispy skin any time. That aside, I prefer Old Chang Kee’s inner ingredients too. Their potato always seems soft (even when I eat it a long time after it has been baked)!
1A crispy puffs makes me wonder if it has anything to do with the A1 chendol in Tampines. Nonetheless, these puffs really blew my socks off the first time I tried them. Beast Old Chang Kee by pretty much a mile, the sardine puffs here are absolutely sublime and tasty, to a point that even describing it makes my mouth water.
Unlike the usual curry puff that will leave you rushing for a glass of water due to its high flour percentage, i realized that everything fitted into place in this one, the pastry unlike others, and its contents truly yummy.
From my view, i think that every Singaporean should give 1A puffs a try, as i think they deserve to hit it big one day!
The puff is also not that spicy! Although majority of Singaporean loves spicy food, there’s still minority of them who doesn’t like it. I’m one of them. However, 1A original curry puffs just perfectly suits me. I’m able to eat two curry puffs without feeling the urge of drink water. I love it so much that I would recommend people to try their original and sardine puffs. *way too delicious :)*
What’s more? It’s AFFORDABLE too! Their puffs are just below $2 and it comes with a large portion of fillings. It’s definitely worth the price for the amount of fillings that you get and you’ll just crave for more. It has already become one of my favorite puffs that I need to patronize to satisfy my cravings.
For one, this place only sells puffs. From sardine puff to curry puff, the texture are all the same. I ordered 1 curry puff and 1 sardine puff to make sure I could make a balanced review for this.
First on to the trip into my mouth was the sardine puff. The flakiness was something that I love about the puff and the way the crust crumble make me squeak like a mice. This is definitely one of those food you eat while you are holding the paper holder or else the floor will eat more than you. The filling however was a bit too spicy for me and it is tingling on the tip of my tongue for just too long. It is not spicy that it hits the throat and chokes you, but rather it is like pins and needles and to me that kind of spicy sensation is definitely not what my tongue was looking forward to.
The curry puff was quick to turn the tide on a bad review. It was definitely nicer than Old Chang Kee in many ways. First of all, the rich curry taste definitely outweigh Old Chang Kee hands down. The taste was rich to just the right altitude, not overly rich that it overwhelms you like smelling curry being cooked over a stove, but still rich enough to wash your whole mouth with a sea of splendid curry taste. The puff maybe smaller than Old Chang Kee but with such rich flavour puff I could not ask for much after. The egg and potatoes are great complement and provided the stage for the curry to lead in the taste. the crust acts as the attendants, breaking away as it welcomes you into curry haven.
The owners at 1A have given traditional curry puffs a twist. Gone with the same old flavour, it now offers flavours like the black pepper chicken (which is my favourite) to its customers. The black pepper chicken ones are best eaten while hot, because you will feel the hot pepper sauce melting in your mouth, which feels really great. The chicken inside is also very tender, no matter how long you store it. Their curry puffs are also extremely microwavable, which means you can buy a whole lot of them and store them in your refrigerator!.
