Alfero Artisan Gelato
Alfero sells gelato on homemade waffle cones, waffle cups, by the cup and even on made-on-the-spot waffles. Expect flavors like chocolate, chocolate with hazelnut, peach and premium flavors like pistachio and tiramisu. Lower in fat and smoother than ice cream, this may very be the healthier and tastier alternative to ice cream.
Alfero’s serves freshly made gelato churned at their main store, and their philosophy of using only the most natural ingredients to produce their gelato is something that I really appreciate. It truly makes a difference in the taste and texture, with the gelato being silky smooth (no ice crystals!) and having a decadent but not cloying mouthfeel. Lovely. I tried a few flavors, with my favorite being the Cioccolato. Chocoholics will definitely enjoy this. I found some of the flavors a tad too sweet for my liking, but maybe that’s just personal preference.
Alfero’s does serve good gelato, and I would say that they’re definitely above average. I didn’t find it mind-blowingly spectacular, but for $4.50 a scoop, Alfero’s is worth each cent.
At Alfero’s gelato is offered ala carte, on cones, or waffles or waffle cups. I had the chocolate and bacio (hazelnut and chocolate) flavours ala carte and they both hit the spot, being incredibly flavourful. I felt a little indulgent ingesting such rich flavours but Alfero’s gelato promises a high nutritional value and contains less fat than traditional ice cream, making me feel less guilty.
However, what is truly worth raving about is their pistachio-flavoured gelato. Not only was it really aromatic, it tasted genuinely like - and contained - real pistachio nuts. Though I have only been there twice, you can bet your bottom dollar that I’ll be back at Alfero’s for more!
The banana-mango-passion fruit was lovely too, but the pistachio beats it hands down.
One thing I must make clear would be the difference of gelato and ice-cream. Whilst gelato is simply an Italian name for 'ice cream', the concentration of ingredients used differs. Gelato is made using a higher proportion of milk and cream, as compared to normal ice-cream, which is made of powdered milk and some artificial flavourings. Hence, the product sold at Alfero, in my opinion, embodies a rich and fragrant taste as compared to ice-cream, a joy on hot days but you may notice, less rich in flavour and its after-taste disappearing relatively rapidly.
Another good thing about Alfero's gelato is that it is made with health in mind. Its fat content is low, and artificial conditioners and flavourings are greatly minimised if not avoided, all while maintaining an authentic taste you'd expect from that particular flavour.
A brand definitely to be considered!
Because gelato is supposed to be much lower in fats than ice cream, this is my go-to place on days that I feel unhealthy but can't give up on my after-dinner dessert. The pistacchio gelato here is my all-time favourite. The first time I tried it, I was blown away. It was rich, thick and flavourful - it was unlike any other pistacchio ice cream or gelato I had. Other must-tries include Bacio, Durian, Hazelnut and Mango. Their waffles are rather average though and I would recommend you get the gelato in a cup or cone. They are also very generous with their servings which is a major plus for a cheapo like me.
I have visited Alfero a number of times and their gelatos never fail to impress me. Ok honestly just by typing this review is causing me to have a craving. Highly recommended!
We ordered 3 scoops on a freshly made waffle and another scoop on their waffle cup. Their waffle cup wasn't really good, as some parts of it were overcooked and some parts didn't crisp up well. However, the waffle that was made on the spot was bam! good.
At least it was for me! It was the type that I like, slightly dense and not too airy like those of Betty Crocker's. It soaked up the ice cream well. Though they don't have much flavors that time, try their chocolate and pistachio!
