Tiong Bahru Bakery has been the talk of the town and it indeed lives up to the raving reviews.

I had the Kouign Amann ($3.50) which was a burst of buttery goodness with hints of salted caramel. It was crisp and had slight flakey layers. It was not like those glazed pastries that end up being soggy and overly sugary. This is a definite must try! The famous crossiants ($2.50 for the plain, $3.20 for the chocolate) are not the chewy kind but more crisp, with many layers of hand rolled pastry.

It gets pretty busy and noisy in the cafe, even when I visited on a weekday afternoon. However, waiting for a table doesnt take that long as there are plenty tables. That being said, the tables and chairs are squeezed really tightly next to each other which makes it a bit uncomfortable and hard to walk around. You have to walk to the counter near the toilet to get water refills or butter/jam and cutlery.

There is adequate service staff around so buying and paying for the bread is a fast process. They even have samples laid out for you to try some of the breads.
