The specialty of Roti Mum lies in its fragrant and freshly-baked Coffee Buns. Founded in 2004, the popular homegrown bakery with the tagline "Singapore Best Coffee Bun" has since set foot upon Indonesia, Philippines, China and South Korea. Roti Mum, which has standard preparation procedures for all their coffee buns, is also known for its iconic open kitchen concept.
Sadly, I do not believe that the buns here tastes as good as they smell. Sure, they taste better than those imitation coffee buns you find in neighbourhood bakeries. But they simply smell too good-their aroma is so alluring, euphoria-inducing, and delectable that you'll be disappointed when you realise that their taste simply doesn't match up.
They're warm and crunchy if you eat them on the spot, but tastes-wise, they simply fail to give you the same high their aromas do. You'll find yourself crashing back to planet earth after taking your first bite into them.
The premise is simple, really. They're just a bakery with an open-view/air kitchen where you can view the process and the buns being ovened. Their signature product, the coffee bun hasn't seen a change in all these years. And why should they? They are good as it is. They seem to have perfected the bun, and a long queue can be seen at most times of the day. My personal way of eating it is to empty all the inside, then savor the crust slowly.

Their signature dish- the coffee bun- offers a very simple but creative combination of taste that will perk one up right away! You'll get the coffee crust mainly from the underside of the bread, which adds a nice caffeine crunch to the bread. The butter is generous on the bread, which gives it that added value.
The breads are pretty big and for a price that's about $1.30 for a bun, its a good offer! Well worth it. My advice when you're ordering is to just take in the wonderful smells of baked bread, butter and coffee. It's a very soothing feeling.
Do note that you'll need to eat this in moderation! The real price you'll have to buy for these wonderful breads is the high cholestrol and fat levels, so just take note!
As you take a bite into this incredibly fragrant bun, you’d immediately feel the buttery goodness on the inside complement the flavorful coffee on the outside. There is little that compares to this unique combination.
Of late, I can’t help but notice more and more stalls closing as demand for the bun dwindles. I certainly hope to see more Roti Mum stores around and would strongly encourage those who haven’t tried this to try it.
The skin isn't oily at all (the paper bag hardly gets stained) and is usually crispy (if they're fresh out). The coffee bread is warm and soft, and has an inner layer of smooth butter that complements the coffee taste of the bread perfectly. It is also satisfying, making it my ideal breakfast.
The buns have a crisp layer that taste of coffee, and the inside is soft, sweet bread. You won't really see butter or coffee anywhere, but it is simply everywhere!

I know that it is calories laden. Else, I would have down a few more buns if I could! This is a stall you wouldn't miss. The strong aroma of buns would definitely tempt you to buy one, if not, a few to try!
Their bread is indeed one of a kind. Fresh from the oven, hot, soft and fluffy, one can down throngs of this buttery calorie laden bread. The crispy sweet topping on the op finishes the whole thing off. At less than $2 for a huge bun, why not?
Simply said, I was disappointed. Their signature crispy exterior was replaced by a normal one. The coffee flavour which made Roti Mum stand out was not so dulled that it was barely there. And the soft and fluffy inner bread which should have been present was replaced by a normal sponge-like feeling with was nothing to rave about.
I guess their standards have dipped over time, which is a sad thing. I honestly can't see them continuing this way for long.
My mum is an insane consumer so she buys up to 15 coffee buns in a trip and we spend the next few days having it for breakfast, lunch and everything in between. It is a small, delicious memory of my younger days leaving crumbs of the bun everywhere at home and demanding my younger sister give me her share.
I have never tried any other buns from them except the standard coffee bun. There is a reason why it made such a big splash way back in 2008 -- it really is that good. Butter goes with anything, and to have crystallized butter inside a aromatic coffee bread is genius. I hate coffee but I bent my rules just to have this so that's an idea of how good this pastry is.
Buy a few and bring them home for the older folks, they'll love it.
