While I agree that cupcakes are less economical than muffins, it's almost impossible to say no to flavoursome frostings on top of moist and fluffy bite-sized cakes - and that's Plain Vanilla for you. Unlike it's name, Plain Vanilla's cupcakes are no where near plain. In fact, they're like happiness in a box. I can't help but squeal with delight whenever I receive a box of PV cupcakes. I'm probably biased because I have a severe weakness for desserts but their cupcakes are just so irresistible! Can never resist their Red Velvet and Salted Caramel cupcakes - definitely worth the calories! :)

Tip: Go early to avoid disappointment as they sell out really fast.

In the past, cupcakes and muffins were synonyms to me - messy, unappetising balls of dough - until Twelve cupcakes came along. That was when my love for cupcakes grew and I never thought I'd be able to find cupcakes nicer than Twelve Cupcakes.

Again, I was proven to be wrong when I first heard about Plain Vanilla. Located conveniently at Holland Village, this little shop has no lack of customers - me included. I vividly remember this time when I was there and the staff was out for lunch. I waited for a good half an hour, only to return to a long queue which continued down the stairs.

Other times included me heading to Plain Vanilla at 7PM only to find them closed, much to my disappointment. My absolute favourite would have to be the red velvet - it's such a classic. However, don't take my word for it - go try it out for yourselves! The cupcakes are moist and yummy, making every bite a delight.

P.S. I still hate muffins.

The only thing better than their cupcakes? Those pretty brown boxes that contain them.

I have no defense. This is hands-down the best cupcakes I'd ever sunk my teeth into. Some might say they're highly overrated but good is good okay? How else would you explain sold-out cupcakes in the middle of the day?

Perhaps I'm not the fairest critic, after all I am severely handicapped and my knees go weak by the mere scent of batter and cream cheese frosting. This is why my favorite is the red velvet, followed by the cinnamon cupcake. I usually pick those, and a random few of others to fill up half a dozen's worth. What? A bigger box containing more cupcakes always looks better no?

They've since expanded and opened another outlet in Tiong Bahru, and this time there is seating available. The outlet at Tiong Bahru sells other baked awesomeness other than cupcakes. Fortunately for me though, my taste buds are loyal to only cupcakes.

Moist and flavorful

Plain Vanilla is definitely one of the more popular cup-cakery in Singapore. The cupcakes sold here are generally moist and fluffy without feeling heavy. I hate cakes that are dry and crumbly!! My favorite flavor would be the strawberry and white chocolate flavor. The strawberry and white chocolate taste great when eaten together in a cupcake and it is a flavour that I haven't tried elsewhere. Nope, not even 12 Cupcakes! The icing here is slightly gritty and sugary though but it doesn't bother me too much because I really like the cake. The only flavour that I don't really like would be the red velvet. It isn't as rich and intense as I would like it to be. It tasted a little bland and flat, even with the thick swirl of icing.

I also like the minimalist and simple take away cardboard box with sits 4 cupcakes. There will be a rope tied to the box for you to hold the box with. Unlike the take-and-go outlet at Holland V, the outlet at Tiong Bahru is a store that allows you to sit in and enjoy their range of cupcakes, drinks and desserts! I had a cupcake there last week and I really liked the overall ambience of the place. It is clean, bright, not overly noisy and as a nice baking aroma wafting around the place. The staff are always friendly and helpful and if are very happy to recommend you their special bakes and popular cakes! Highly recommend all their cupcakes except for the red velvet ones.

A cupcake specialist in the midst of other classy restaurants and pubs in Holland Village. Located at the second floor of a shophouse opposite Harry's bar. Priced at $3 per cupcake. The cupcake's were dense and had were perfectly aerated. The frosting really complemented the cupcake. Some cupcakes like the vanilla bean had a sweet dollop of cream to accompany the cupcake which had a crispy top and soft inside. Their red velvet is a must try!

The milk chocolate banana was a little disappointing as the banana did not go well with the frosting and the cake itself. The cookies and cream one was heavenly. A chocolate cupcake served with cookies and cream frosting with a small piece of oreo as garnish. Take the circle line to Holland Village and try these cupcakes yourself to see why they are rather outstanding in terms of taste and location!

Happy vibe inducing, but too sweet for my liking

Like all cupcakes that look pretty, Plain Vanilla makes endorphin-inducing ones that are bound to cheer your day up just by looking at it.

My friends gave me a Strawberry White Chocolate cupcake and I was instantly cheered by it. It's basically vanilla cake with a fresh strawberry centre, topped with white chocolate frosting. It sounds extremely good and appetizing, but was slightly too sweet for my liking. Would've been better if the white chocolate frosting was less saccharine-infused, and it kind of overpowered the vanilla cake itself. My friend really liked the Red Velvet one though, and said it wasn't as sweet as the Strawberry White Chocolate one.

That said, I would go back to Plain Vanilla again! It's a nice gesture buying cupcakes for your friends even without any occasion, and Plain Vanilla delivers pretty and decent-tasting ones at fairly reasonable prices.

I've heard enough raves about this hidden cupcake place in Holland Village to want to try it so badly. I wish I could say it didn't disappoint but it did although it made up for the disappointment in the end. I went quite early on a weekday morning and tried their cinammon cupcake. The cupcake wasn't like what other people described it to be. It was moist, or rather a little too moist bordering on sticky texture.

Giving it another chance, a few days later, I got a red velvet cupcake. This time, they got it just right. I guess I'll avoid the sugared cinammon flavour from now on and try their other flavours. The pricing is a little more expensive than Twelve Cupcakes but it's quite worth the money.

I visited the outlet at Holland V with a friend at her recommendation. They had very interesting flavours like Chai Tea and the more classic ones like Red Velvet, but sadly none of my favourite citrus flavours.

However, personal preferences aside, their cupcakes were pretty good. I enjoyed both Chai Tea and Red Velvet, and this other cupcake which had vanilla and a huge chunk of dried strawberry in it. The sharp tanginess of the dried strawberry cuts the richness of the vanilla; it was a great combination. I also enjoyed their super refreshing mint lemonade, though I think it is too sour for normal taste buds. My friend did complain that it was "too sour", though the sourness was just right for me.

On the whole, though, I'd recommend this place to cupcake lovers (and yes, more than *AHEM* the overpriced 12 Cupcakes).
