Located just a short distance away from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts is Thai Gold Food. One of the more affordable Thai food in town. Found this hidden gem a while ago and found myself too, patronizing their store often. Do not expect any fancy interior décor. Thai Gold Food is tucked in one of the corners, at the first floor of Sunshine Plaza, it is no wonder as of why many would not notice its existence and walk past this place.

Once you enter, you will be greeted by the staff (most of them are Thais). There is this homely feeling the moment you step into Thai Gold Food. Next will be to order, there are a few dishes that I would normally go for. One of which would be the Pad Thai. The texture of the noodles taste slightly different compared to the usual and you will notice that there are containers on the table with sugar and crushed peanut. You can sprinkle it on your Pad Thai to improve its overall taste.

Their Tom Yum soup is worth a mention. If you are able to take spicy food well, go for the one that is spicy, which I thought was really spicy! Otherwise, you can request for the less or non-spicy version. I usually order the one that is seafood (mix). It will arrive boiling as it in a hot pot. Bowls will be provided for you to scoop your own serving of soup.

Other dishes include their green curry, the one with rice and chicken chunks tasted real good, better than it looked. As green curry is added to the rice and it might look a bit wet, but the taste is not bad. Though I feel all the dishes on the menu would not be too far off either. However, their pineapple rice, topped with chunks of pineapple and cashew nuts is average.

As for drinks, I will usually go for their Thai iced milk tea (S$1.80). The taste of the milk tea varies from time to time. One time I went and I felt it was a bit more bitter (the tea taste was stronger), while another time I felt that it was too sweet. If you do not feel like ordering any drinks, cold/warm water is provided.

For dessert, it is nothing else but mango sticky rice (S$5). Yes, the rice is so well-made and it will leave you asking for a second serving. One last piece of good news, you will find that there is no GST or service charge. You know how these taxes can be quite a bit sometimes and places with good food and no extra charges, definitely a plus point!

By lunch or dinner, there will usually be a short queue by then. Go early to avoid disappointment. If you haven't been there, you are missing out and your first time might just not be your last!

I used to go to restaurants or slightly more commercialised Thai eateries to get my Thai food fix in the past (which usually left me unsatisfied with a hole in my pocket) until I discovered Thai eateries owned by Thai people - these places usually serve up Thai food that’s cheaper and so much more authentic.

I discovered Gold Thai Food while I was walking around with my dining companion, looking for a quick dinner option. We opted for a seat outside the eatery as the interior was slightly too cramped to accommodate the two of us and our bags.

We ordered the Thai Milk Tea, Thai Fried Vermicelli, Tom Yum Soup and Pandan Chicken. The Tom Yum Soup wasn’t too spicy (which was good for me!) but it was a bit too sour. The pandan chicken on the other hand was delicious, especially when eaten with the accompanying Thai sweet chilli sauce. The Thai Milk Tea was awesome too.

The bill came up to be slightly less than $30, which I thought was well worth the money. It’s a good place to visit if you’re looking for good and affordable Thai food.
