Stranger's Reunion is an over-rated café, really.

In case you didn't know, it started as a really cosy cafe but ever since the hype surrounding it's coffee by "two-time Singapore National Barista Championship winner Ryan Tan" - the place is just getting worse since it moved to the bigger unit just next door. A shame really, as I really liked the original concept when it was more personable.

If you are looking for a cafe to chill and read a book - this is not the place to go as it is crowded at every time of the day, and especially during lunch time. If it gets any more crowded, I will have to resort to throwing a pack of tissue to reserve my seat. The new cafe is definitely bigger and brighter, so it is made to function more like a restaurant instead of a cafe. If you are thinking about going alone for lunch, be prepared to share seats as they will re-organize lone diners onto shared tables to accommodate the crowd. On the other hand, if you have a party of four and above, this may be a good place to just catch up with your friends - be prepared to talk above the noise level.

The menu is pretty extensive and I had tried several items including their waffles topped with berries and vanilla ice-cream, which are very popular; and their steamed pork belly buns. Both are deservedly competent. Their main draw is of course coffee by "two-time Singapore National Barista Championship winner Ryan Tan" (or is it three now?). I thought the coffee was strong and fragrant, but I didn't find it any better than the other small cafes in Keong Saik, Tiong Bahru. Many new(er) cafes have sprung up around the area and along Jalan Sultan and I would rather go to these new cafes which prepare and serve coffee with a more personable touch.

Just goes to show what hype can do to change a business model. Well, all the more for me to go hunting for newer, cosier (and better) cafes.

I was there just the other day and yes, it is terribly crowded. To my left were a bunch of expatriate ladies with babies in prams. To my right were a bunch of office folks who were cackling. This is not a place to have a quiet conversation. And the latte... I couldn't tell the difference from any other latte. I am sure the latte art was lovely but I didn't notice as I needed to get some caffeine into my system.
