Real Food? Not So Real Meat Though
Overall Score

2.5
Real Food is a vegetarian/vegan restaurant that was recommended to me by a friend. As someone who does not eat meat, I was stoked to finally be able to eat something other than salad. I ordered a Veggie Meatball Pasta and my friend ordered a Beet Burger. Unfortunately, the pasta looked dehydrated and ropey, and the meatballs were made out of chickpeas that fell apart the minute I poked it with my fork. The point of veggie meatballs would be to emulate the juicy-ness of an actual meatball, but the texture was just so off that it was a sad attempt.

The Can’t Beet This Burger was a lot better, though, as the patty was juicy from the beet and carrots in it. At $12.80, it was worth it and the portions were satisfactory. Although not out of the world, it was refreshing to taste a veggie patty that was not made from chickpeas or tofu for once. Their juices were freshly squeezed and tasted just like a liquid version of the fruit, but slightly overpriced at $6.

Overall, ambience was nice, some dishes were disappointing and others were good. I believe that a truly good restaurant has no such thing as ‘a wrong thing to order’, but unfortunately Real Food didn’t fall into this category.

Maybe your new year’s resolution for 2017 was to eat healthier but you haven’t been keeping to it. Yeah, it’s March and it’s easier to just wait for 2018 to start again. You don’t have to wait that long because Real Food has got you covered.
In case its name isn’t clear, Real Food serves, well, real food. As in organic food but also REALLY GOOD food. You’ll be hard pressed to find a restaurant in Singapore that serves organic food that taste this good.
They don’t just serve your #basic kale salad and quinoa bowl. Their Sweet Pumpkin Sourdough Pancakes are so sinfully sweet you’ll forgive yourself for wondering if you’re actually eating organic food. Pair it with their refreshing Nourish Your Heart Real Serious Smoothie and you’ll have yourself the perfect organic meal.

Meat free, but not taste free

Real food is my kind of restaurant. Meat free and caring about the environment, they also don’t try to hide what they aren’t. Take a look at the website and you’ll see them admitting that their food is not cheap like other less healthy alternatives, and that the restaurant isn’t a fast food joint so don’t expect your food to come quickly. Might seem a bit weird, exposing their negatives to those who have never even visited, but I kind of like how they don’t try and pretend that they’re something they don’t aim to be.

There is a really large choice of meals, all being vegetarian or vegan, and the menu includes whether they are gluten/ wheat free etc. The service was a bit slow and they charge $0.50 per glass of tap water, bit stingy, but overall I thought that the whole experience was good. I wish that I had asked for no chilli on my Aglio Olio, as the whole thing was a fire in my mouth, which is really a shame as the rest of the meal was really delicious.

Although they admit they’re not the cheapest restaurant in the world, my pasta was only $7.80 and I thought a really reasonable choice. I want to go back and try the burgers, and my only wish is that they started using vegan cheese so that there are more vegan options.
