Transport yourself to the Pearl of the Orient as you savour sumptuous Hong Kong cuisine. Be it delectable dim sum or succulent roast meats, you’re in for a real treat. Try netting your own fresh seafood and have it prepared by authentic Hong Kong chefs. You’d be satiated beyond belief.
And this place was on my list.
I came here on an afternoon with my 3 unwilling friends. We settled down quickly because there were no queues and the service was quick.
We ordered their xiao long bao, har gao and an assortment of little custard buns and fried stuff that I am not familiar with.
Maybe it's the hunger but for a picky brat like me, I actually found their har gao to be better than Crystal Jade's (I am sorry baby) and I ordered seconds.
Everything else is still subpar to my usual haunt (Crystal Jade 1314) but I would come back for their har gao. The siewmai here isn't too shabby too.
I would not come back again though, too little to miss.
He told us he had made many business trips to Hong Kong so he was familiar with Chinese food. It was just nice this restaurant was called Old Hong Kong Kitchen so it may serve Chinese food he was used to eating in Hong Kong.
We ordered roasted pork, roasted duck and char siew. We also ordered salted egg prawns, spinach and some tofu. Our partner really enjoyed the food, he especially liked the roasted pork and char siew. He almost completed the whole dish by himself. Throughout the dinner, he kept commenting the food was good.
I say this because they have managed to get the two basic Time Sum dishes - Har Gau and Siew Mai - done to near perfection while still surprising with some modern dishes such as the X.O Carrot Cake.
The few times I went (raffles city and novena square), it was incredibly hard to get a table due to their relatively small premises. If they could somehow sort that out, I’m sure my family and I will be regulars here.
The porridge that was served wasn’t hot and all, even if it was, it wasn’t even tasty nor whetted our appetites. The rice rolls, costing 3.60 for 3 rolls filled with a skimpy amount of bbq pork had a hard skin instead of the soft smooth skin we can even find in kopitiams. The polo bun, the only bun which came sufficiently warm enough for consumption, was doughy and floury in texture. Even my family who do not really eat a lot of breads complained about the bad texture. I time and again gave it chances, thinking that it might be that particular dish that they didn’t do really well, but all the dishes failed. And we ordered so many dishes at that!
The worst food ever, and this is not solely my sentiments, many others of my friends also echoed my opinions when I complained about the bad food.
Their milk tea, like most hong kong cafe is really delicious. The tea taste is distinct and fragrant and is not diluted at all. Overall, I feel that Old Hong Kong Cafe is a very affordable place to dine in for decent Hong Kong food.
If you have seen my other reviews, you will have seen my high preference for Taste Paradise Dim Sum. This restaurant has not swayed me from it. The usual dishes leave me with no impression, which probably meant that it was of average standard. The Xiao Long Baos were not bad - the skin was not chewy and thick like the many places I have tried.
I will recommend this place if one was dining with his or her parents - the place definitely had a standard Chinese feel to it which I think the older generation can appreciate more! Places like Taste Paradise may make them feel a little more tense but this place will be perfect for a family get-together with its cosy atmosphere.
My recommendation of dish for first-comers is the soy chicken. Its a must try food in OLD HONG KONG kitchen. They also provide "盆菜“ during the chinese new year season. However, you have to collect it from the restaurant by yourself. There is no delivery provided.
Considering the quality of food, atmosphere and service, I give the restaurant 4.5/5 !
Firstly the decor was bright and airy with floor-length windows, wallpapered walls and Chinese furniture. The staff were friendly and responsive. We had the set lunch menu with 6 courses, from soup to dimsum to mains and dessert. While some dishes were nothing special, like the vegetables and E-fu noodles, all courses were good and tasted authentically Hong Kong. The double-boiled soup and mango sago dessert were exceptionally well done. And at only $12.80+ per person, it’s good for a day-off treat or a relaxed gathering. The ala-carte menu had a great variety of unique offerings as well. We found out from the waitress that the set lunches change weekly in a monthly cycle, so there are 4 sets to try in total. I would definitely go back someday. Time to unleash my inner high-tea-loving tai-tai.
Their menu is very comprehensive and includes many options for side dishes, rice, noodles and congee. So is their beverage menu, which includes milk tea, yuan yang (coffee and tea mix) and also boiled coke. I love their congee as it is very smooth and ingredients aplenty, and it paired well with their crispy fried fish skin and chilli. Feel free to order any of their fried noodles or fried rice from the ala carte menu as none of my past orders have disappoint me. Their custard milk bun (liu sha bao) is the best I had eaten thus far - hot chewy bun with smooth golden salted egg yoke custard within. Do try some of their unique dim sum dishes such as double skin chee cheong fun with wild mushrooms, you will be surprised by this dish.
I would briefly elaborate my experience during breakfast. I ordered a bowl of chicken porridge, the bowl was decent and kept me full throughout the day. Apart from that, I enjoyed the famous Chinese Dim Sum, I had a delicious crispy spring rolls (raddish,lettuce,beansprouts and prawn wrapped in a layer of the dumpling skin). The ingredients are very fresh and on top of that, you can dip the spring rolls into the sauce specially matched with the dish.
Apart from that, I also had delicious char siew bao. The char siew given was generous and tasty. Other dim sum dish that I had is the flavourful and juicy chicken feet, prawn dumpling and a pot of hot chinese tea as the thirst quencher.
As for the dinner, the experience is slightly different. I didn't reserve in advance but fortunately, there was not a lot of diners yet and I got the table.
I ordered steamed fish with ginger, delicious soup placed in the yam ( I am not sure about the name of the dish), Half of the roasted chicken and Baby Kai lan as the vegetable.
The food cooked was good, fresh and it was an original Chinese cuisines.
Overall I was very satisfied with the food and the service, and would definitely come back for another awesome dining experience.
On a side note, if you are going to dine in there, you might want to check out their deals or promotions for certain credit/debit cards. You could enjoy them at lesser price or even get it as compliment.
