My first time clubbing was in Zouk and its still my go to place when I want to hit the town. Needless to say, Zouk is in a realm of its own. Its a world renowned club that's situated on this small little island in South East Asia and up to today that still boggles my mind.

I usually spend most of my time at Phuture just because I prefer the music there but every once in a while, Zouk itself is awesome to hang at because the energy there is amazing. And having to elbow people to move is fun too, in its own way. The first time I went I was blown away by the chandeliers. (I'm easily impressed)

Money wise, your not going to get excellent value no matter which nightclub you go to so, like anyone else would tell you, drink up before you get there and just dance the night away. Girls, make sure to cash in on ladies' night to save a couple bucks.

Many youngsters and working adults seem to be involved in nightlife more often nowadays. It is a reward for them to chill out with friends after a long day of hard work. I've visited quite a number of clubs but hardly goes to pub as I prefer drinking and dancing to sitting down and listening to music. Zouk is so far the best I've experienced. Velvet Underground and Phuture are inside the club for people who love to shake on the dance floor. There is a 1-for-1 alcoholic drink promotion before 12am too. Early birds can drink with friends while waiting for the dance floor to get filled up. By that time, it is your chance to show the best movements. I prefer Phuture music which is pop and R&B as Zouk is more trance. Plus the crowd is better at Phuture, unless you don't like to squeeze you can choose the other side.

Zouk also include a Wine Bar for friends who wish to get some drinks before dance or have a good chat. However it is quite difficult to speak as it is usually crowded on Friday and Saturday. If you are holding a CitiBank card, pop by to get your free entry on Friday and Saturday nights, you might need it.

Zouk, touted to be one the best nightclubs in Asia – ranked number 10 on DJ Magazine’s list of Top 100 clubs in the world – certainly lives up to its title. For an unforgettable, raving mad, but jolly awesome good time with your chums, Zouk is the place to be at. With three interconnected clubs (Zouk, Velvet Underground and Phuture) and the Winebar to frequent, you would find the right music, ambience and activity tailored for you. Or, simply pop by all 4 of the places if you get bored or have a short attention span (I guess the apt thing to say would be, "too sober to 'get it on'").

Velvet Underground is my favourite hangout of them all. It is a rather quiet and relaxed lounge with smooth house/soul/chillwave music and sometimes, indie DJ mash-ups where some of the Indie (Pretentious) KoolKat-Wannabes would be at *Rolls eyes*. That said, Velvet Underground go-ers are generally avid music-lovers at heart (or at least seem to appear so there. There is less frisking going on (sorry sex-craved NS boys, but phuture is where you should be at).

Internationally recognised, Zouk is notably reputated for inviting world-reknowned DJs to spin. Arguably one of the best clubs in Singapore, here are afew pointers as to why after so many years, they remain at the top of the list for party-goers.

Alcohol is an integral part of clubbing and Zouk is no stranger to differentiating their alcohol choices. For instance, try their Snow White and Seven Dwarves, Flaming AK, Sour Plum Shots or the exclusive Velvet Rose. Knock yourself out with those unique flavours to Zouk. Whether it’s time for crazy partying or chill-out drinking with buddies, Zouk offers one of the best ranges of choices for everyone.

Next I'd like to highlight one key event: Zoukout, a massive party event that Zouk plans yearly to be held at Sentosa. Past 3 years alone, many world class spinners like Guetta, Avicii, Afrojack, Tiesto, Chuckie and many more were invited to rock till sunrise. Each year differs from the next and if you miss one, well, let's just say the videos won't do justice to the amount of fun it is there.

Unfortunately, spaces in Zouk are way too cramped, especially when a guest DJ like Afrojack is invited, you can forget about squeezing into the dancefloor. Phuture, one third of Zouk's segmented dance floors, is so crowded on weekends instead of dancing you'll just be wriggling because of the lack of space. However, it isn't that packed on ladies night wednesdays, so my advice if you want to avoid crowds would be to take the day off on thursday and head down to Zouk on wednesday.

Missed their mambo nights!

Zouk has to be blamed for all the last minute urgent leaves on Thursday mornings or MCs for Thursday. Not sure if it’s due to the great retro hits they played, the interesting party goers or the i-need-a-break-in-midweek kind of mentality, I have always loved their mambo nights!

The party goers there are a friendly bunch of peeps. Over the years that I have clubbed there, I seldom witness any fights. Even if so, their bouncers are professional enough to bring the ‘fights’ out of the club instead of some ah-beng bouncers who will join in the fights instead.

The drinks are also affordable and its always fun to see people dancing with the same dance steps when the major hits are being played.

For working adults to sacrifice their precious weekdays-on-time sleep or their precious hard-earned leaves on Thursday, this definitely has to be something good. Not sure about the rest but I’m very sure me and my friends missed the fun we had at mambo nights and will always remember Zouk as the ‘big daddy’ in Singapore’s clubbing scene.

I used to frequent Zouk so much that I know I can drop by the club and immediately see familiar faces around. It was like second home. My friends and I got acquainted with the house DJs, the bouncers and random people. We even sat down and had Martell with the owner and his wife once! (Psst, sometimes you'd get to see local celebrities at the Members' Bar)

I remembered the very first time I stepped into Zouk, it was a Wednesday night and they still had Mambo Jambo (aka mambo nights) back then. Amused by all the synchronized dancing? Yes. But did I search YouTube for dance moves so I could join in the fun the following week? .... Yes. It's unfortunate that Zouk gave up on Mambo nights in mid-2012. But hey, let's not forget about the pumping R&Bs at Phuture and Velvet Underground!

Zouk also invites international DJs to spin, some notable ones are Steve Aoki and Dash Berlin. On a side note, Dash Berlin would be spinning on 10 Feb 2013, remember to start queueing really early. The queues can get ridiculously long. If you're not the dancing kind of person, you could just chill at Winebar with your friends (but do remember to reserve a table!)

So pop a few beers, down some tequila, shout over the loud music and dance your night away. A wise man once said, no one looks back on their life and remembers the nights they got plenty of sleep.

TGIF my friends!

Throughout my life, I had gone to Zouk only twice. I am not a habitual clubber and I must be compelled by a higher calling to even contemplate going there, but go there twice I did.

The first time back in 1996, I accompanied a group of friends of mine who decided on a whim that our Saturday night out would be nicely topped off by a visit to Zouk. So we ended there. That night, as I would recall, DJ Lisa Loud from the UK was spinning and I must say I enjoyed her tunes.

The second time in 1998, I accompanied my girlfriend to her faculty's party there. It was more like Mambo Jambo. The place is not huge by clubbing standards but there is a certain feeling of classiness associated with Zouk that couldn't be replicated by other clubs.

Now? I have no reason to go there at all. I would rather go to a blues pub.

I must admit, in my nineteen years of existence, I have never been into Zouk till recently. I still remember the shocked faces of the people I met in the club when I told them it was my first time there, after all, Zouk is THE club to be seen and party at in Singapore. Internationally renowned, many of my foreign friends who know how to have a good time always go to Zouk whenever they are in Singapore.

Nestled behind the Grand Copthorne Waterfront hotel, Zouk is in a whole clubbing league of its own. Undisputedly the biggest club in Singapore, Zouk is divided into four zones, and being a Citibank user never felt so good at this place. With the Citibank card, you can enjoy 1-for-1 drink deals at the Wine Bar and free entry into Velvet Underground. Velvet Underground is further divided into two rooms- a classy lounge area and a dance floor. The dance floor seems to house an older crowd though, and if you enjoy house music, that is the place to be. Unfortunately, I could not stand five minutes on that dance floor as the music was extremely un-danceable and all around me were pretentious posers bobbing their bodies to a genre of music I just cannot seem to appreciate.

Phuture was much more enjoyable. The music was amazing with Top 40 remixes and it was fun singing along to the lyrics of popular music with the rest of the crowd. The dance floor, however, is extremely packed and even if you wanted to bust out a move to the addicting beats, you could never as people would constantly push in and out of the crowds.

The best thing about Zouk is that people know people who know people and the list goes on. There, you meet mutual acquaintances, old friends, new friends and even family on rare occasions! I made so many new friends of friends that night I visited the club; so many that I am sure I would definitely bump into someone I know the next time I club there!

Zouk is definitely my all time favourite club of all time. Even if I may club hop all the time, at the end of the day, Zouk is where I want to be.

Firstly, the music always keeps up with the trends, playing the latest music with remixes that anyone can groove to. Secondly, there is cheap alcohol options in Holiday Inn, just a 5 miniute walk from Zouk itself. One bottle can cost just a mere $20 bucks. Where else can you find good music and cheap alcohol?

The only negative factor is that sometimes the dance floor is too crowded to groove freely. I like to think that this is so because the music is just too good and everyone likes to be here.

Getting too old for this
Overall Experience

Sometimes I wonder when I will ever get bored going to this place. It seems like every time when my CCA organises post exam party it is always held at Zouk. Well so throughout my 4 years of tertiary life, I have seen this place just a couple of times. Zouk, comprises of Wine Bar, Phuture, Zouk and Velvet Underground. Phuture plays R&B, main dance floor Zouk usually has guest DJs and Velvet plays house.

It gets really crowded when there are popular guest DJs, although I can't really judge accurately cause I've only been to one guest DJ performance. Sadly when the school buys out the venue the ticket sales never really hits the target and usually the place will be less crowded than usual. On normal days, Citibank members get free entries and 1-for-1 drinks at Wine Bar though, so that is pretty awesome. Getting too old for this kinda things, definitely a place to experience while you are young.
