Joochiat - Heaven by day, Hell by night
Overall Experience

2.5
Joochiat, with its colorful colonial houses and quaint neighborhood, boasts a number of upscale cafes and even an art gallery to boot, if my eyes did not deceive me the last time I was there. A good mix of traditional crafts and fine dining, the heritage-rich venue seems a likely candidate to be a favorite haunt of the modern hippie.

Yet all that would change with the coming of night.

At day's end, this innocent little enclave transform into a sleazy red light district reminiscent of Geylang. Admittedly, the situation is vastly improved from that of previous years. However, it is still not uncommon to hear drunken quarreling in the middle of the night. Driving along the streets, one is also bound to notice the many suggestively clad ladies loitering outside bars and clubs.

My uncle, living in a shophouse in Joochiat, bears testament to all these. Joochiat may be an angel during the day, but the devil reign at night.

My memory of Joo Chiat was that of the mahjong sessions I had at my friend's house in Joo Chiat. My friend lived at one of the landed house in Joo Chiat. When I was serving my National Service, I would be there every few weeks to play mahjong at his house.

My friend's house was also very near to the famous Fei Fei wanton noodle at Joo Chiat. We would always go to this shop to eat wanton noodle after our mahjong sessions. The famous rice dumplings from Joo Chiat was also only a few shops away.

At the end of the street, there is also a run down shop selling famous black pepper crabs. The queue there would start as early as 5pm.

I think the Joo Chiat area makes for a great alternative tourist attraction, since it is located away from most of the major sights. But if tourists have an extra day to spare, Joo Chiat is my pick, to learn about the Peranakan heritage. Aside from the Perankan museum, I believe the key Peranakan heritage attractions are located in Joo Chiat.

There are the Katong Antique House and Perankan Inn next to each other - both have traditional Peranakan decor and make for fascinating visits.

That said, the number of Peranakan highlights are few. The rest of the trip to Joo Chiat can be spent on the various eateries located along East Coast Road, including some that serve Nonya (Peranakan) food. There's Glory Catering that sells various kueh, and a dumpling shop near 112 Katong that sells Nonya dumpling!
