If you want to learn a little bit about Malaysia, this place can be a start. The National Monument was created in honour of those who sacrificed their lives to fight for freedom and independence for the sake of a better tomorrow and a better Malaysia. If I am not mistaken, the tribute is for the heroes that fought during the time the Japanese conquered Tanah Melayu.
If you still remember your history, yes, it was those brutal times. Going on a tour in Kuala Lumpur with this particular spot being a part of the tour will allow people to learn a thing or two about struggles. It may even give people courage and hope as to struggle for a better tomorrow.
If you are ever on a tour around KL city, do make sure that the tour covers the National Monument. The statue is kept clean and there is a detailed explanation telling of the brave soldiers and their sacrifice for the country. I felt a big pang of sadness but always appreciation when I was reading the text.
IT is a good place for a historical lesson for locals and foreigners alike.
