I came here often when I was a kid as I was an avid comic reader and Popular was much better than MPH for that reason. They had the latest volumes of popular Japanese comics (BM version) in Malaysia.
I prefer MPH's dimmer lighting compared to the very bright lighting at Popular. I'm sure that it is just a minor issue but it does affect me and a few people I know who hardly goes to Popular nowadays as the bright lighting is uninviting.
Popular stay true to it's name. Among me and my fellow students, this store outshines the others for its wide range of books which are mostly a tad cheaper compared to some other bookstores such as Times and MPH. However unlike the latter, you are not allowed to 'sample' or read the books and no sits are allocated for you to read in.
The staffs in the City Mall, Kota Kinabalu branch are friendly and were very informative. They do carry newer novels and books but the items that are on sale are usually novels which are older by date of publication. However, I do think that they need to update their teens section. My personal favorite, the True Singapore Ghost Stories series are also sold here.
Besides that, they also carry a wide array of computer accessories such as mouse, headphones and external hard disk, some basic stationary and office supplies. For online gaming fanatic such as myself, you could also get Molpoints to fund for your online games here. And last but not least, they also provide top up services for your mobile phones if you happen to stumble upon the shop while you are low on airtime.
Unlike MPH Bookstores, Popular Bookstore sells a wide variety of items other than books. Although it is mainly focused on book, it has items such as computer accessories, digital equipment, earphones and etc. But the best part, you can use the BR1M book vouchers for any item at all here.
Normally it can only be used for books but Popular makes an exception to that. Furthermore, if you spend more than a certain amount, they will award you with an additional voucher. The last time I came here, I bought a laptop cooler and a laptop bag. Kinda bad for me to misuse the voucher but I badly needed the bag as all my bags were ripped. If anything, this place is a lifesaver as I have managed to save a lot of money by using the vouchers instead.
