Teaching young children how to respect the general workers whom we often come across isn’t too difficult of a task — just ask Cikgu Syuhaida! She has found an excellent method to instil moral values in children.

According to mStar on Tuesday (23 Jul), she would bring her schoolkids from Taska Nurul Ilmu in Seberang Perai Selatan, all aged between 1-5 years old, to offer refreshing drinks to the school’s gardeners and council workers.

Excited to see garbage trucks passing by

Cikgu Syuhaida’s students were always distracted during lessons when the city council’s truck stopped by the school for collection. They would be so excited at the sight of their favourite orange-clothed heroes that they’d run to the sliding door and shout out, “thanks, pak cik!” while waving their hands at them.

This inspired Cikgu Syuhaida to continue fostering the kids’ kind hearts by bringing them out to meet the garbage collectors at least once a week. Then, these taska kids offer drinks as a sign of thanks for their hard work.

Heart-wrenching comments from the orange-clad heroes

One of the workers told the kids to study hard so that they won’t end up like him. The children were still too young to understand where he was coming from since in their eyes, the garbage collectors are society’s heroes and the orange uniforms are their superhero suits.

In another incident, a kid wanted to give salam to the workers but they had to decline because they were worried about their hands being smelly.

Hearing these comments, it shows the importance of young children learning to appreciate and respect people from all backgrounds, no matter their occupations. If more teachers like Cikgu Syuhaida continued educating these kids, Malaysians may see a day where prejudice among social classes diminishes.

Everyday heroes matter

They may not wear capes or have super strength, but general workers like gardeners and cleaners are the unsung heroes of our community. Their roles are crucial in creating a clean and comfortable environment for us to live in, which means that they’ve more than earned our respect.

If children 5 and below are already looking up to these heroes, us adults should be able to do the same.
