Taman Mount Austin is a residential area in Johor Bahru that is just a 5-minute drive from Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park. With bubble tea shops at every corner selling a range of drinks from classic milk teas to fruit-based teas, and priced from RM5.50-RM18, you are bound to find a cup that’s to your liking here. 

Along the street, you’ll find comfortable and cozy cafes to rest your feet at. You’re sure to satisfy any food cravings from the wide variety of savoury meals, pastries and desserts offered by these cafes.

Taman Mount Austin’s charm is the fact that it has more than 10 bubble tea shops in a single street.

Must-tries here include I’Milky, which specialises in milk-based beverages. The classic Bubble Milk drink (RM10.90) features milk with black pearls, which tastes smooth, creamy and refreshing. Their special soya-based milk series allows you to pick from a variety of bases –  Black Tea, Green Tea, Oolong Tea, Qing Tea, Barley Water, and Earl Grey – to be paired with Soy Milk (RM8.90) to satisfy those who are not into dairy beverages.

There are also popular bubble tea spots around Malaysia found here, such as Xing Fu Tang, with their special handmade caramelised brown sugar pearls. Their signature Brown Sugar Boba Milk (RM12.50) is their best-seller, a fan-favourite drink with fresh milk and chewy brown sugar pearls. With every sip, there is a slight burnt caramel taste that leaves a sweet aftertaste in your mouth.

Other familiar bubble tea spots hiding out here are The Alley, Chatto, and The Monarch Tea.

Consider switching up your usual bubble tea order at Seven Bus, a popular bubble tea store from China that’s known for their fruit teas and Yakult-based ice blended drinks. Some of their must-tries are Original Soybean Milk Tea (RM13.90) – a popular order among customers for creamy soya bean-based milk tea topped with soya bean powder. There are also interesting drinks such as Caramel Pudding Milk Tea (from RM13) and Handmade Taro (RM14).

You’ll find over 30 aesthetic cafes with beautiful interior designs, doubling up as both eating and photo-taking spots.

Taman Mount Austin - The Atlas Masion

For those who love freshly baked goods, consider hitting up The Atlas Maison, a minimalist, Muji-inspired cafe. It’s recommended among locals for the array of French pastries, miniature cakes, and breads they have displayed at their counters. Their Croissant au Buerre (RM5/pc) – buttery, flakey croissant – is a classic here. But if you’re dropping by on a cheat day, their Strawberry Chocolate Tart (RM25) and Blueberry Danish (RM7/pc) are decadent desserts worth trying too.

Those feeling peckish will have their all-day brunch menu to order from, which boasts menu items such as Wild Mushroom Egg Benedict (RM26) and French Quiche & Iberico Ham (RM28).

bloom by Mokmok is another crowd favourite due to the dreamy display of dried flowers hanging from its ceiling. Their mains are made up of Japanese and Asian-Western fusion dishes, such as Kaarage Chicken (RM23) and Grilled Chicken (RM25) served with curry. Don’t miss out on their Egg Pufflets (from RM18) – Hong Kong-style egg waffles that come with different choices of sauce toppings, such as matcha and chocolate, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

New cafes often crop up in Taman Mount Austin too, including Ukiyo Cafe. This new cafe in JB serves pretty desserts from its an eye-pleasing pink space. You’ll get to rest you feet here while picking out desserts such as their Vanilla Mille Feuille (RM28) and Lemon Meringue Tart (RM19), which pair well with coffee and tea.

When you head to Taman Mount Austin, you won’t find many out-of towners. Most visitors are residents from the Austin Heights area as Austin residence is at the heart of Taman Mount Austin. If you don’t like crowded places, this neighbourhood hideout in JB, with bubble tea spots and cafes, is a perfect fit for you.

Getting there:

  1. From Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park, head southwest on Jalan Austin Heights 8/1
  2. Turn left onto Persiaran Austin Heights
  3. Take a slight right to stay on Persiaran Austin Heights
  4. Turn right onto Jalan Austin Heights 1 and walk 250m
  5. Turn right onto Jalan Austin Heights 1/2 and walk 110m
  6. Turn right onto Jalan Austin Heights 1/3
  7. You will reach Austin Heights in Tama Mount Austin.
