Syed Saddiq donates RM50K for Muar constituents

It wasn’t too long ago in March 2021 when Muar MP Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman took to Facebook to announce that he would be leaving for Singapore for a month to complete his studies in public policy on a full scholarship. With it, he also shared that he would returning a month’s salary to the Muar parliament for use.

That is not the end of his commitment to help out the town in Johor that he serves, as he will be donating his student allowance to help the underprivileged upon the completion of his studies. He raised RM50,000 in donation funds, with RM20,000 of it raised through classes he taught on Zoom while undergoing mandatory quarantine in Singapore for his studies.

Donation from student allowances and Zoom classes

In a post dated 11th April 2021, the Muar MP shared that he had finally completed his Senior Fellowship programme at NUS Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and that he felt “refreshed and energised”.

Along with the announcement, he said that he would be donating all of his student allowance to the unprivileged in Muar as he had been on the programme on full scholarship.

To raise even more funds, he contributed what he had garnered in fundraising through online Zoom classes he taught during his quarantine in Singapore. The classes touched on subjects such as critical thinking, public speaking, and writing and advocacy.

All in all, he contributed 100% of his student allowance and fundraising from his classes, which amounted to over RM50K, as well as his MP salary while completing the programme. He previously decided to return his MP salary as he said he did not “deserve” to keep a salary while he was pursuing his studies abroad for a month.

The recent addition of funds from the allowance and teaching came as he “wants the best for Muar”.

On his way back to Muar after quarantine

In a Facebook post dated today, 12th April, Syed said that the funds raised will go to helping families in Muar who are facing financial difficulties to purchase laptops, tablets and uniforms for their kids, among other necessities.

At the end of the post, he also said that he is currently back in Malaysia, and has been in quarantine since last Saturday. He will be returning to Muar after completing his quarantine.

Syed Saddiq shared in a previous Facebook post back in September 2020 that he had been attending online classes for the programme in Singapore, and did so to “improve [his] ability to serve” after opting not to further his studies at Oxford University in the UK to pursue a political career.

So we congratulate Syed Saddiq for finally completing his studies in public policy while also serving the country, and helping out local communities by donating RM50K to the underprivileged while doing so.
