Quarantine-free travel from 29th November

Malaysians are returning to their favourite attractions again as Covid-19 restrictions have eased nationwide. Expanding our travel itineraries is now a possibility too, with countries welcoming fully vaccinated Malaysians without any quarantine requirements for tourism purposes.

This will include Singapore soon, with quarantine-free air travel between Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Changi Airport permitted from 29th November 2021 onwards.

The Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) agreed upon by the two countries is to benefit fully vaccinated travellers to Singapore, and accommodate those seeking to return to Malaysia with ease.

The decision to launch the VTL between KLIA and Changi Airport was agreed upon by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

A joint statement was shared by both parties on their respective verified Facebook accounts on 8th November.

According to PM Ismail Sabri’s Facebook post, he spoke with Singapore’s Prime Minister via phone call to discuss the current travel restrictions between Malaysia and Singapore due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Taking into account the “significant progress” made with vaccination rates and general pandemic management by both nations, cross-border travel to and from Malaysia to Singapore for those who are fully vaccinated will be allowed again, from 29th November.

PM Ismail Sabri noted that this VTL will help restore both countries’ economy and resume a long-standing bilateral relationship, while taking into account the health and safety of the public.

As such, the VTL will come with restrictions to continue the fight against Covid-19. Only air travel between KLIA and Changi Airport will be permitted for the fully vaccinated. Covid-19 testing will likewise replace mandatory quarantine for inoculated travellers.

To address another popular cross-border transportation method, PM Ismail Sabri said that travel between Malaysia and Singapore via the Johor-Singapore Causeway Link and Malaysia–Singapore Second Link is still being discussed.

Any future decisions made will have to take into account the public health situation in both Johor and Singapore.
