Food delivery services have become our new best friend during the Movement Control Order (MCO). Whether it’s satiating our cravings for fast food or need for bubble tea, it’s been helping us miss the outdoors a little less while we’re staying at home.

With this, many Malaysians have been showing appreciation for their abang delivery riders in different ways, including belanjaing them to free meals. Not the end of the sweet story between Malaysians and their riders, a viral post on Facebook of an OKU Grabfood delivery rider with no hands has been further gaining the appreciation and respect of many.

Beating all odds by continuing to work without hands

The inspiring story was first shared on Facebook by Edmund Gan on 2nd May 2020, and has since gone viral with over 11,000 reactions and 3,000 shares.

Like most of us utilising food delivery services right now, he said that he requested for his delivery to be contactless. But his request didn’t go through this time around, when his delivery rider requested assistance for his bubble tea order when he arrived.

Edmund soon learned that it was because his delivery rider had no hands and was unable to leave his order by the door. His surprise even made the rider, whose name is Syahrain, joke about it when he caught him staring at his arms: “You can stop looking, it’s not there”.

Syahrain is said to have lost his hands during an accident in Primary School, but that it didn’t stop him from continuing to ride his motorcycle and make a living for himself as a food delivery rider. He is even described by Edmund as being full of life, and being optimistic and cheerful.

Others also came out to share their own stories of hardworking delivery riders during MCO, including netizen Gaik Chin Khoo. She shared that she was thankful for her rider who continued to deliver her food even in the rain and without a raincoat, and he even apologised for getting lost on his way to her house.

Facebook comment 3
“I ordered food last week. It was raining and he couldn’t find my house. I was tracking him on my phone, and he was going the wrong way so I opened the gate and waited for him. When he arrived, he continuously apologised. I tried to make him drive his motorcycle into my porch, but he refused and only brought his bag in. I really sympathised with him”.

OKU delivery rider inspires by delivering food without hands

Syahrain’s inspirational story joins the likes of an OKU woman who sews protective gear for frontliners using only her feet, which is keeping our smiles going between all the daily updates of COVID-19 during MCO.

It also serves as a reminder for us to be thankful for frontliners, including food delivery riders such as Syahrain, who are overcoming all odds and keeping us safe while we stay indoors at this time.
