We’re often out on the road at an ungodly hour just to avoid the peak hour traffic crawl, but this doesn’t eliminate the risk of accidents happening, as a young Malaysian man learned when he got into an accident in the early morning.

Fortunately, someone was there to lend a helping hand and even showed an exemplary way to deal with emergency situations like these. Malaysians chimed in after learning about this heartwarming story which inspired them to share some of their own.

Kind stranger stops to lend a hand

On 21st January 2020, 27-year-old Taufik Zainuddin recounted a heartwarming story in a post he shared on Twitter. His younger brother, 25-year-old Mohamad Asyraf, had gotten into an accident when driving in Subang Jaya around 5AM in the morning.

According to mStar, Asyraf was on the way back from Tanjung Malim, heading towards the hotel he worked at in Putrajaya. The accident happened when he was riding along a bridge in Subang Jaya where there was a long divider which he didn’t notice until it was too late. Crashing into the divider, Asyraf was flung aside from the impact. He landed in the middle of the road, motionless.

Taufik continued to say in his tweet that he wanted to express his sincere thanks to an 18-year-old Indian boy named Thiban who graciously offered a lending hand to Asyraf. Thiban, who lived nearby, came out of his house after hearing a loud noise from the crash to find Asyraf on the ground. He then helped move Asyraf to the side so that he wouldn’t get run over by any passing cars in the area.

Thiban contacted Taufik through his brother’s phone to inform him about the situation, and offered to stay by the victim’s side with his friends until an ambulance came. He even made a call to the brothers’ mother, who was in Kelantan at the time.

Thiban’s good deeds didn’t stop there he went the extra step to offer to park Asyraf’s motorcycle safely in his apartment complex parking lot, reassuring him that there were CCTVs around and that Asyraf could contact him any time to retrieve it.

Praised for his kind deed

“I really owe one to Thiban. May God always bless you bro. You helped people regardless of race and religion. This is truly what being a Malaysian means. I don’t know what would’ve happened to my brother if he wasn’t there earlier. “Thank you all for your messages and prayers. I hope God blesses all of you. We should spread more love than hate. This Thiban is a real hero!”

Twitter user Marceline shared how he once fell into a drain with his motorcycle by accident. He could pull himself out, but could not get his motorcycle out as it was too heavy. Not one passerby stopped to give him a hand, prompting him to ask for help from passersby by waving his hand. Sadly, no one approached to help.

After 20 minutes, he received help from an Indian man who noticed him as he happened to pass by, after he had just ended his work shift as a security guard.

Another netizen, Haziq, shared his experience of the time he got into an accident with a friend, but was helped by two Chinese men.

His tweets in Malay said:

“When I got into an accident with my friend on the way back from work, there were 2 Chinese boys, Jordan and Lee, who helped us out. They told us they would bring us to a clinic, so Lee told us to wait by the side of the road where the accident happened so he could drive his car over.

“And Jordan went to 7-Eleven to buy water for us. When Lee arrived in his car, I was embarrassed to get in as he was driving a BMW 7 series. My friend and I were bleeding all over.

“But Lee said, ‘It’s okay bro, just get in, don’t worry about it. If the car gets dirty, I can just get it washed later.’ I was immensely touched. Lee then brought us to the clinic while Jordan took my brokendown motorcycle to get it fixed at his dad’s repair shop.

“I can’t ever forget the good deeds of these 2 boys. The most amusing thing though was that Lee and Jordan were both only Form 5 students from SMKSJ, Class of 2017. So to Lee and Jordan, thank you so much and only God can return your good deeds.”

Truly 1Malaysia

Getting into an accident is one of the worst things one could encounter, but thankfully, you can always count on Malaysians to gather around and help out these victims on the road. In these times of need, we’re grateful to have unsung heroes such as Thiban, Jordan, and Lee, who go out of their way to provide assistance.

With Chinese New Year just around the corner, let’s all take this an important reminder to always be vigilant when out driving. And if you happen to stumble upon a fellow road user in trouble, do spare a few minutes to see what you can do to help out.
