Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) may look very no-holds barred, but it takes a lot of patience and technique to get results. It’s not only about throwing punches, but knowing how to block them.  

The sport of MMA is a mix of many different martial arts fighting styles and techniques such as boxing, muay thai, wrestling, jiu-jitsu and judo to name a few. A lot of MMA gyms and studios have sprung up around Klang Valley, and here are some that need to be on you radar.

Team X Fight Academy’s website reviews reveal the comradery between the members and their trainers where everyone’s on a first name basis.

Other than the usual MMA styles, Team X also offers Pekiti Tirsia Kali, which is a traditional Filipino close-quarters combat style. This is not a common find the roster of classes at MMA studios, so it may be a good way to mix a new style into your MMA.

2. Lekir Fitness & MMA Academy – only RM15/class for walk-ins 

Lekir Fitness & MMA Academy holds their classes from the late evenings until midnight – perfect for night owls. It’s a good way to get your fuel pumping right after work, especially for a walk-in rate of just RM15/class.

3. FightFam MMA Gym – bring a friend for personal training

4. Fade Fitness & MMA – open 24/7 to workout on your own time

While 24-hour gyms is not a new concept, there aren’t many that cater to MMA. At Fade Fitness & MMA, you can either choose to have free reign of the gym and do your training in your own time, or you can opt for one-on-one training. Given that it is a gym set up for MMA, you’re open to work on your combat techniques anywhere.

The approach at Gainz MMA strikes a balance between combat and defense styles. If you’re a newcomer or want to bring your kids here, you’ll be happy to hear that Facebook reviewers have commended the trainers’ patience and ability to teach any skill level.

Monarchy MMA has international certifications for Muay Thai, Krav Maga, Grappling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu where many of their athletes compete on the International stage.

8. MuayFit – 8,000 sq. ft. of training space 

Muayfit’s PJ headquarters is an 8000 sq. ft. space that is equipped for starting from scratch with mats and punching bags, or honing your skills in the makeshift ring setup. Most of the classes are led by professional competitors from Malaysia, Thailand, and Brazil with MMA backgrounds.

9. HIT Fitness & Martial Arts Gym – fighter training classes available

HIT Fitness & Martial Arts Gym specialises in 10 martial arts and fitness programs – boxing, MMA, kickboxing, muay thai, and self defense. 10. WUJI MMA – teaches a rare Chinese fighting art form

WUJI MMA as the name suggests, teaches WuJi – a rare type of Shaolin boxing which is centred around ancient Chinese philosophy. It’s a martial art that’s said to require plenty of discipline and an understanding of philosophical concepts in order to master.

Learning such a lesser known MMA style might give you a slight edge, as others are not as informed of the WuJi style. It is the only MMA academy on this list with that specific style, so you can be sure to surprise your opponents with a move or two they haven’t seen. Prices are usually quoted upon application.

Hailing from the Philippines, Biagtan Martial Arts has now touched base in Puchong. The studio was actually founded by URCC Strawweight World Champion Fritz ‘Kid Tornado’ Biagtan – one of the youngest champions in Philippines.
