Man double masks with DIY gear earns netizens’ praise
Double masking was recently recommended by KKM to double up on protection against COVID-19. Most of us have been going with the usual duo of surgical and cloth face masks while out at higher-risk areas, as instructed.
But this man at a vaccination centre in Langkawi opted for something a little different – a surgical face mask over what looks to be a DIY contraption straight out of a sci-fi movie. His efforts at protecting himself had the Internet commending his A+ efforts to stay safe at this time, as COVID-19 daily cases in Malaysia have been surpassing the 7K mark in recent days.

Photos of the creative man with his DIY mask was shared online by Facebook page Langkawi Kini on 27th May 2021.
According to the caption, the photo was taken at Dewan Badminton Langkawi.
A quick check by The Smart Local Malaysia identified the area as a badminton court at Langkawi Sports Complex, which is being used as a COVID-19 vaccine administration centre as shared by Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah Langkawi.

Needless to say, the man’s face mask was quick to turn heads at the vaccination centre with how different it looked from most people’s methods of double masking.
His mask appears to be a snorkelling face mask, which typically allows individuals to breathe and navigate easily underwater.

But he creatively linked the top of the mask to a large plastic bottle with a sliced-out bottom by way of a pipe. This is presumably to allow air to flow freely through from the bottom to the top, and not hinder his breathing.
What looks to be an N95 mask can also be seen attached to the end of the pipe in the neck of the bottle to filter the air that he’s breathing in.
Not forgetting SOPs, he even doubled up with a yellow surgical face mask atop the unique contraption.
Netizens praise double mask efforts to keep safe
His creative efforts had many coming out to praise him for trying to keep safe at this time.
A reshare of the photos by Oh! Media on Facebook racked in over 2K shares and 22K reactions.
Facebook user, Razeema Hj Mahadi, for one, came out to applaud the man’s actions, commenting “Good for this man. Nothing to laugh about here. He must either really care for his own safety and follow SOPs, or he may just be a high-risk individual. He’s just being extra careful. I salute him for doing this even though he knows that a lot of people will laugh at him.”

Another netizen, Razif Rayyan, also commented in defence of the man, saying, “The uncle’s cleverness should be applauded. He is alert of the current situation, and is following SOPs.”

Many more came out to praise the man’s creative way of staying safe from COVID-19 at this time, including Diane Dania. “This is just his way of avoiding COVID-19. Perhaps his family is affected and he is slightly paranoid. Or he is a high-risk individual himself. So don’t look lightly on this virus. There are new variants,” she commented.

We have seen Malaysians coming up with impressive ways to keep themselves safe during the first days of the MCO 1.0, including this man who DIYed a hazmat suit out of trash bags as protective gear. This man at the vaccination centre in Langkawi who double masked is no different.
It just goes to show just how creative humans can be when they want to – all in the name of keeping themselves safe.
