Teens cook instant noodles in hotel’s bathroom sink


When staying at a hotel, guests would typically munch on potato chips or make hot snacks like instant cup noodles. However, a group of teenagers decided to up the thrill factor during their hotel stay by cooking packets of instant noodles in the bathroom sink and using toothbrushes as chopsticks. 

The video was originally uploaded on TikTok and then deleted, but not before it was reshared on Twitter where it went viral. Netizens have been voicing their concerns about the teens’ ‘cooking hack’ due to hygiene concerns.

On 2nd January 2022, an account called @TikTokBerguna reposted the video of the teenagers’ antics on Twitter. Since its posting, the video has managed to garner 1.2 million views and more than 5,000 retweets.

The 19-second long video showed one of the teenagers hovering over the bathroom sink, presumably cooking instant noodles in it as if in a bowl. On top of that, they substituted chopsticks with toothbrushes.


Netizens express worries over cleanliness


The video has since been deleted by the original account. But it was uploaded on Twitter where it caught the attention of concerned netizens. This included Dr Nimelesh Balanthiren, who works for The Ministry of Health Malaysia.

In a tweet thread made by him, he urged netizens to not follow the footsteps of these teenagers as bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella and Streptococcus are commonly found in bathrooms.

He added that these bacteria could lead to many illnesses such as food poisoning, jaundice and even pneumonia. Dr Nimelesh also stated that many germs can be found on our palms, which is why it is essential to wash our hands.

Other netizens also took the time to share relevant information and experience to voice their concerns about the teenagers’ actions, which many pointed out was just a way to garner views on TikTok.

One netizen shared their experience working as a hotel housekeeper for six years. In a tweet with more than 200 likes, the user urged the public not to trust the cleanliness of hotel rooms, even if the hotels  have a 5-star rating.

Another user stated that the traces of the cleaning agents used to kill germs on the surface can be hazardous to human health.

The majority of netizens on Twitter had similar reactions to the viral video, with many also imploring others not to follow in the teenagers’ reckless way of cooking instant noodles.

This viral video astounded netizens, likely because nothing like it had ever been done before. Whether it was to garner the public’s attention via a reckless stunt – or simply an unwise decision made by these teenagers without much options for kitchen tools – we hope that Malaysians will be more alert to the importance of cleanliness when in public places, especially during this pandemic.
