Malaysian girl buys a new Pandora ring for herself, but her friend thinks it’s weird

We’re all too familiar with the saying, “treat yo’ self”, which is probably why this Malaysian lady decided to reward herself with a shiny new Pandora ring.

On Sunday (14 July), Twitter user who goes by the username Nis visited a Pandora store and bought herself a nice ring. She then went back home and posted a photo of the ring on her WhatsApp status, which prompted a less-than-enthusiastic reply from her friend.

To sum up the conversation, her friend couldn’t understand why a single woman would want to buy a ring for herself since they are usually gifted by someone special.

This, of course, sparked an unending stream of comments from netizens who stand by Nis and her Pandora ring.

Hopefully, Nis won’t let her friend’s words get to her head and stop her from proudly flaunting her new ring.

Nis posted a screenshot of the WhatsApp conversation she had with the friend. The messages in Malay translates as:

Friend: (replying to the photo of the ring) Like seriously? Are you insane?
Nis: Why?
Friend: Are you okay? Why did you buy this?
Nis: Can’t I even buy a ring?
Friend: It just seems weird. It’s always the boyfriends who buy these, or someone special. But you? You’re buying it for yourself.
Nis: I didn’t know a girl couldn’t buy a ring for herself.
Friend: It’s up to you. I don’t know, sis. It just doesn’t seem right.

There was a whole lot of confusion

If reading the above conversation makes you feel like this meme…

You’re not the only one.

Nis was understandably confused about the whole affair, saying,

So I bought myself a ring, but look at what my friend said. I don’t get it? Girls can’t buy a ring for themselves?

She must’ve wanted to celebrate her latest buy, but instead of receiving compliments from her friend, she was questioned on her behaviour as it was deemed ‘weird’.

Twitter users share their two cents

Her tweet can be translated as:

Nothing wrong with rewarding yourself. Why do you need to be so pathetic and live life by depending on men? We are independent women who don’t rely on men’s money. We don’t need to wait for a proposal if we want to buy something nice for ourselves. Also, blast Ariana Grande’s 7 rings in her ears.

Soon after the post went up, Twitter users came together to show their support for Nis by praising her for being a good example of embracing self-love and independence. Many of them argued that women should be able to treat themselves to the finer things in life such as jewelry, without being regarded as weird just because they weren’t gifted by a man.

At the end of the day, women need to be encouraged to practice self-love. This can mean treating yourself to nice things, even for no apparent reason, because the whole point is for you to feel good about yourself.
