While many Malaysians have been trying their best to abide by the extended Movement Control Order (MCO) when they’re out only for essentials, there are also those who have yet to comply and are continuing to give flimsy excuses for it.

It turns out some are now taking matters into their own hands, like this man in Terengganu, who has found the perfect solution for MCO defiers. He posted a photo of a ghost sighting in his town, which turned out to be something else completely.

On 28th March, Muhd Urabil Alias shared a series of photos of a ghostly figure standing on a white van on his Facebook page, along with a caption that translates from Malay to English as: “Are there any job openings in RELA or the police station tonight? I’m bored of sitting alone”.

Complete with a long, flowy white gown and even a white wig, the figure Muhd captured on camera looks convincingly like a ghost – or Gandalf the White from the Lord Of The Rings. And with Malaysians loving a good scary story, his post went viral with 3,500 shares and 1,000 likes on Facebook.

The scares lasted while they could, but Muhd eventually admitted to Harian Metro on 30th March that his post was actually part of a prank to scare stubborn teenagers around Taman Aneka Jaya and Kampung Pulau Tempurung in Terengganu who were disobeying MCO orders.

He said he had personally donned the all-white outfit and had his wife take photos to share online so these teens would be afraid to leave their homes.

Following this incident, he said his prank may have spooked teens who had stopped going out at night. He even had to apologise if the photos caused any unnecessary panic and harm.

Many were left either confused or amused with the post before h the prank was revealed, with the majority taking to comment on Muhd’s Facebook post on who his fashion #inspo could be: Gandalf, or a fed-up looking Dumbledore from Harry Potter

Some also brought up Old Man of the South Pole lookalikes, as well as allusions to another old man in the North Pole, Santa Claus.

With Enhanced MCO announced in parts of Malaysia, it’s more important now than ever to stay at home to help flatten the COVID-19 curve.

Muhd’s technique of convincing youths to stay at home is undoubtedly amusing, and we’re glad it effectively did its job by scaring away those who’ve been out and about during the MCO.
