20,596 new Covid-19 cases in Malaysia, 5th August


It was only yesterday, 4th August 2021, when Malaysia recorded the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the country. But today, 5th August, sees an unfortunate increase in infections in the country, with 20,596 new cases reported today by KKM.


Over 10,000 cases in KL and Selangor


Of the 20,596 new cases recorded today, 5th August, Selangor once again reported the highest number of cases in a state nationwide, with 8,549 new cases. Following after is Kuala Lumpur, with a total of 2,163 new cases.

States recording cases in the 1000s as well are Johor (1,300), Sabah (1,062), Kedah (1,446) and Penang (1,022). Negeri Sembilan (989), Perak (916) and Kelantan (772) also had daily counts nearing the 1,000s.

Meanwhile, Perlis (4), Labuan (15) and Putrajaya (50) are the only areas in the country where new cases are falling below the 100 mark.

Today’s daily figure sets yet another unfortunate benchmark in the country, with cases surpassing the 20,000 mark for the first time since the start of the pandemic. It also breaches yesterday’s record-breaking cases of 19,819, and previous highs recorded from 1st January 2021 to today, 5th August. 

The addition of 20,596 new cases today puts the country’s total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases at 1,203,706.

While the country continues to fight Covid-19, as of 4th August, 45.8%, or 14,941,585 million individuals who registered to get vaccinated have received their first vaccine dose. Another 7,704,996, or 23.6%, are now fully vaccinated with two vaccine doses received.

In total, 22,646,581 individuals are in the midst of completing, or have already completed their vaccination.

Yesterday (4 Aug) saw an addition of 494,214 individuals who got vaccinated, as reported by JKJAV today, 5th August.

The recent spike in Covid-19 cases sees daily counts breaching previous records in just 24 hours. With cases yet to fall below the 5-figure mark in the country, we are reminded to continue to limit our outdoor excursions at this time to help the fight against Covid-19.
