Mention ‘Japanese cheesecake’ in Klang Valley and The Tokyo Restaurant will pop into a lot of people’s minds. Although they’re primarily a Japanese fusion restaurant-bar, their cheesecakes are so celebrated that they have become synonymous with their identity.

Cheesecake connoisseurs and casual followers of the dessert alike are in love with their 6th Avenue cheesecake (RM20 per slice) and would reportedly keep returning for it. Unlike regular cheesecakes that have a dense texture, this one is extremely soft to the extent where it melts in your mouth like a mousse. Served alongside a generous dollop of fresh cream, it’s an indulgent dessert that’s worth its higher price point.

5. Huckleberry Food & Fare – Basque burnt cheesecake

Huckleberry was one of the first few cafes in the Klang Valley to put the Basque burnt cheesecake (RM18 per slice), a version of the dessert that doesn’t come with a crust and is baked at a very high temperature, on their menu. Theirs are made with French cream cheese and organic eggs, baked till they achieve a lightly charred “crust” on the outside and a creamy, thick cheese texture on the inside.

Even though Basque burnt cheesecakes are pretty commonplace now, Huckleberry’s remains a favourite as proven by their long waiting list during weekends, so be sure to head there early in the morning so you won’t have to queue as long.
