Award-winning speakeasy bar in Penang

We all love a hidden spot for good food and drinks. It’s likely why speakeasy bars have retained their allure to this day, and become popular concepts for modern bars even in Malaysia. Whether hidden in secret alleys or underground passages, drinking dens that we have to actively find has a charm to it.

Over in George Town, Penang, there’s Backdoor Bodega, a speakeasy bar hidden seamlessly inside a clothing shop, sandwiched between unassuming shophouses. The not-so-secret, secret bar is touted as one of Asia’s 100 best bars, thanks to its well-crafted speciality cocktails.

It goes without saying that locating this speakeasy is no easy feat.

But we’ll let you in on the secret – look out for a clothing shop called The Swagger Salon near Hin Bus Depot. Head to the back of the store and you’ll find yourself in a dimly-lit swanky and slick bar, no larger than an average living room.

In true speakeasy style, Backdoor Bodega claims to be an ‘overpriced lapel pin shop’. This is because patrons have to purchase an enamel pin to be served a ‘free’ drink – so there’s technically no sale of alcoholic drinks involved. Brilliant.

The team of bartenders behind this speakeasy may be small, but their passion and excellence in concocting the perfect cocktail is every bit a reason to visit the bar.

Cocktails with a local twist

Consistently lauded for their unique mixes, Backdoor Bodega’s menu boasts an extensive list of classic cocktails as well as their signature creations that infuse local flavours.

There’s their signature Kelapa Hotak (RM35) which is a combination of house-made coconut rum, pandan and a spoon of kaya. Another must-try is the Mango Martini (RM38), which features strong gin flavoured with Pamplemousse Rose, mango and grapefruit, and featuring surprising bits of sago.

A house rum blend of nutmeg and assorted spices, the highly requested The Meg (RM38) is an ode to the essence of Penang, the state being one of the few places in the world that folks consume nutmeg in juice form.

Another locally-influenced staple cocktail is Eugene (RM38) – dry gin flavoured with zesty Cointreau, homemade mishi doi (a Bengalli yoghurt), yuzu puree, and lime juice.

With eclectic ingredients like these, it’s safe to say that their cocktails will intrigue even seasoned bar-goers, locals and tourists included.

If you’re not in Penang to try out their concoctions in person, you can purchase their bottled cocktails and merchandise online. They ship nationwide, with next-day delivery offered.

Apart from their speciality flavours, they have a range of seasonal drinks and collaborations available. As a bonus, their bottled cocktails come in playful packaging that references familiar household consumables – such as their Cap Pintu Medicated Cocktail (RM42).

Perfect for a gift or a good cocktail on hand at home, their bottled cocktails have a set long shelf life and retain the quality and flavour you would get if you were drinking them at the bar in person.
