Sudut Pandang cafe in Bandung

With more and more cafes that look as if they should be in architecture magazines, it’s fair to say that the dining scene has undergone a massive glow-up in the last few years. Heading out to lunch can feel like stepping into a contemporary art museum and the line is about to get blurrier even more now that the unique Sudut Pandang cafe is open for business.

This not-a-cafe but not-quite-a-contemporary-art-museum-either boasts stunning architecture and an immersive multimedia installation on top of delectable dishes. Sitting in the chilly Punclut tourist spot to the north of Bandung city center, the location is perfect for a quick getaway and change of scenery from the city.

Tastefully designed dining space with stunning architecture

From the outside, Sudut Pandang, or literally “point of view”, looks very much like a modern art museum or a designer’s home in the mold of Frank Lloyd Wright’s houses.

The lovely reception area continues that theme with artistic wooden ornaments hanging from the ceiling. From here, the path splits into two with one leading to the Sudut Rasa restaurant and the other to the immersive multimedia installation Sudut Cerita.

Entrance to the restaurant is free but there’s a minimum order Rp. 50,000 (~USD3.47) per person. We feel that’s more than reasonable though as the tasteful design and stunning architecture is more than worth the price, although the 2-hour limit can be tight.

Blending nature with contemporary design, Sudut Rasa, literally “the flavor corner”, uses an open-air concept with plenty of natural light and a smattering of greenery.

Thanks to its location in Punclut, you’ll never notice the lack of air conditioning either as there’re plenty of cool breezes to go around.

From the restaurant, you can go up to the rooftop area where you can take in the surrounding greenery of Lembang.

For the best seats in the house, you can also sit inside the more exclusive glass igloo by the rooftop that comes with a minimum order of Rp. 1,000,000 (~USD69.39) and seats up to eight people.

The menu is still a bit limited, with standard cafe fare such as Pan Fried Salmon (Rp. 110,000, ~USD6.94) mixed in with local street food such as Cireng (Rp. 24,000, ~USD1.67), or fried tapioca flour. Special mention goes to their mocktails and the refreshing Virgin Lychee Mojito (Rp. 34,000, ~USD2.36) is perfect if you just want to chill on a Sunday afternoon.

As Sudut Pandang is technically still in a soft opening period, their menu is continually being updated, but we like what we’ve seen so far.

Museum-like immersive multimedia experience

The other half of the Sudut Pandang, Sudut Cerita or literally “the story corner”, is an immersive multimedia experience with a central narrative running through each installation. It’s very much in the mold of the Future World installation in Singapore’s ArtScience Museum or the Amber immersive wonderland in Bekasi.

The first chapter of Sudut Cerita revolved around climate change, and each installation came with a description of how it relates to the said issue.

“Chapter 2” of the exhibition is now open and tickets are available on-site or on GoTix Indonesia, and this cycle of exhibits will presumably continue on thereafter.

Though small in scale, the installations would make a fine addition to your social media page. Entrance to Sudut Cerita costs Rp. 50,000 (~USD3.47) and there’s a pre-wedding package available if you want the space’s Instagram-worthy installations to accompany your special day.

Sudut Pandang Bandung is a new Instagram-worthy spot in Bandung

Punclut has long been a favorite weekend getaway destination for locals as it has that killer combination of lovely scenery and proximity to the Bandung city center.

As such, we recommend visiting Sudut Pandang on weekdays if you can, especially as reservations are only available from Monday to Thursday.
