Restaurants, hotels, and things to do in Cipete

In days gone by, braving the culinary haven and the beauty salons in Jalan Cipete of South Jakarta meant dealing with traffic jams in the area’s notoriously narrow streets and lack of parking spaces. That has since changed thanks to the addition of Cipete Raya MRT station on the west end of the street in 2019.

If you haven’t got the chance to sample the delicacies on offer in this neighbourhood, this guide on where to eat, where to stay, and things to do in Cipete will help point you in the right direction.

– Where to eat in Cipete –

1. Pagi Sore – upscale Nasi Padang with top-shelf rendang

With so many incredible nasi padang and rendang dining options out there, getting Indonesians to agree on which restaurant serves the best rendang – slow-cooked beef braised in thick curry sauce – might be impossible but Pagi Sore definitely is worth a try. Considering they carry the tagline of Jagonya rendang (the authority in rendang)” and have racked up scores of satisfied diner reviews, they kinda have to be.

Here, they serve food in classic Padang style where all of the side dishes are served at the table and customers are charged only on dishes eaten. With hygiene guidelines in mind, each dish is now wrapped in plastic wrap to keep the food untouched till it’s eaten.

Their trademark Rendang (Rp. 26,400, ~USD1.79 a la carte or Rp. 34,100, ~USD2.31 for a set meal) is darker and thicker than that at most Padang restaurants but just as tender and importantly, not overly chewy.

If you’re visiting on the weekend, you might want to visit outside of lunch or dinner hours as Pagi Sore is a perennial family favourite.

2. Wo Ai Mie – gourmet mie ayam where you can create your own bowl

With a cute pun on the Mandarin phrase “wo ai ni”, which means “I love you”, we’re already fond of Wo Ai Mie even before getting a taste of their “mie ayam, but make it fancy” philosophy. This contemporary noodle bar puts a modern twist on chicken noodle, an Indonesian street food staple.

Here, you get to choose between the Local Favorites (Rp. 30,000, ~USD2.03) mie ayam with chicken cooked in mushroom broth or some of their more creative options. As spicy-loving Indonesians, we would be remiss not to recommend the spicy Wildfire (Rp. 52,000, ~USD3.52) mie ayam with sliced beef and fermented chili paste akin to Korean gochujang, or chili powder sauce.

If you’re looking to get creative, or just plain hungry, you could create your own bowl with various side dishes such as ngoh hiang and wontons. For those who’re particular about the texture of your mie, you also get to choose between the mie karet, or rubbery noodles, and mie keriting, or curly noodles.

For those looking for a change of pace from the many Korean and Japanese all-you-can-eat BBQs that have popped up all over Jakarta, try out D’Izgara. This Turkish BBQ is unique in that the meat is cooked on terracotta grills, a natural fit for the Middle-Eastern inspired decor.

There are several packages available ranging from Reguler (Rp. 165,000, ~USD11.17) with beef and chicken while Premium (Rp. 195,000, ~USD13.20) adds lamb for good measure. Both will still give you access to the many side dishes available, including as many samosas, naans, and baklavas as you can stomach.

Make sure to try out their trademark honey yoghurt lemon sauce, which surprisingly goes very well with the meat.

4. Ikan Bakar Cianjur – seafood banquet for large groups

No journey of Indonesian food would be complete without a proper seafood banquet of our country’s famed freshwater fishes. And there’s no better place to do that than in Ikan Bakar Cianjur (IBC), literally “the grilled fish of Cianjur”, which refers to a town in West Java where the chain first started.

As the name suggests, IBC’s specialty is their Ikan Bakar (Rp. 110,000, ~USD7.48) where the fish is marinated in soy sauce and margarine while being grilled. Also of note is their Ikan Pesmol (Rp. 110,000, ~USD7,48), fried fish served with Sundanese yellow curry sauce – and the sauce alone pretty much makes this place worth visiting.

All of the main fish dishes on the menu come in either gourami or tilapia versions, and we heartily recommend trying out both. In true Sundanese style, the rice is served in wicker baskets covered with banana leaves, and you can upgrade to the fancier Nasi Liwet (Rp. 40,000, ~USD2.72) where the rice is cooked in coconut milk with a mix of spices. The resulting fragrant aroma is a delight on its own.

As with Pagi Sore, IBC is almost always filled with large groups on weekends so you might want to come outside of lunch or dinner hours if you’re not keen on waiting.

5. Twin House Cipete – a perfect spot for picnic brunches and garden parties

Having an outdoor picnic next to the busy Jalan Cipete doesn’t sound like the smartest idea but somehow, Twin House Cipete made that idea work. In fact, Twin House’s outdoor green space has made the house a popular place for bridal showers and even weddings.

The menu here leans mostly western, such as the Monterey Chicken (Rp. 65,000, ~USD4.40), or grilled chicken breast topped off with tomato salsa and mozzarella. But there’re also interesting fusion dishes such as the Nasi Wangi Roast Beef Sambel Matah (Rp. 70,000, ~USD4.73), or fragrant rice with Australian striploin and Balinese sambal matah, or raw chillies.

Even if you don’t fancy an outdoor picnic, the titular twin house of the cafe is plenty homey enough for a casual meal. Do be sure to check in first with the cafe before visiting as you don’t want to make the trip only to find the place is reserved for an event.

6. Skups – chic gelateria serving original flavors and egg waffles

If you’re getting sweaty from all of the walking, Skups has well, scoops, of refreshing gelatos you could use on a short pitstop. This small gelateria serves 12 unique flavors at any given time but they’re regularly rotated, making them ideal for repeated visits.

If the flavor’s available, we recommend going for the Rose Stracciatella where shreds of chocolate are mixed directly with the rose-flavoured ice cream instead of sprinkled on top. For vegans, Skups serves dairy-free sorbets, such as the Passion Fruit Sorbet, where the fruity flavors make them refreshing on a hot, sunny day.

The gelato comes in three sizes, Double Skups (Rp. 28,000, ~USD1.89), Triple Skups (Rp. 38,000, ~USD2.57) and Hexa Skups (Rp. 90,000, ~USD6.09). Each regular cone is an additional Rp. 4,500 (~USD0.30) but don’t stop there and go for the Crazy Crunch egg waffle cone instead, which is an additional Rp. 38,000, (~USD2.57) for a more fulfilling bite.

Do note that limited seating is available, social distancing for dine-ins is in place, and takeout is always available.

7. Toodz House – private home turned cozy hangout spot

For those looking for a change of scenery from the typical minimalist decor of modern cafes, you’d be happy to know that Toodz House exists. This private home-turned-cafe might not look like much from outside but you’d never want to leave the second you step into this homey cafe.

The vibe in Toodz is probably best described as haphazardly comfortable, exactly how a well-lived home should be. Space is a bit limited since it’s a house, but we especially like how no two seats in the cafe are exactly the same, with different rooms giving off their unique atmosphere.

While you’re taking in the vibe, don’t miss the cafe’s signature Carbonara Rice (from Rp. 46,000, ~USD3.12), available with a variety of side dishes from breaded chicken to black pepper beef. If you’re just chilling with friends, go with the Carbonara Platter (Rp. 55,000, ~USD3.73) with fries, wings, fried mushrooms, etc and the carbonara as a dipping sauce.

As the ground zero for Jakarta’s booming coffee scene, no trip to Cipete would be complete without a visit to the various coffee shops dotted around the area. The highlight is Toko Kopi Tuku, the progenitor of the es kopi susu trend in Indonesia and the ideal option if you’re just getting some coffee to go.

If you’re looking to just chill or trying to get some work done, try Dua Coffee, famous for being co-owned by Rinaldi Nur Pratama, older brother of Indonesian singer-songwriter Raisa. Other popular hangout spots include SRSLY Coffee, where the laid-back vibe makes for the perfect setting for a casual brunch.

Short of injecting coffee directly into your veins, Jakarta Coffee House might be the best place to go for a strong caffeine fix. The bean selection is excellent, including the house special Si Petung, black coffee with just a hint of sweetness, and the knowledgeable baristas are always happy to give you some pointers on what to try.

Petrolheads and people looking to up their Instagram game will no doubt relish in the classic cars on display at Hauwke’s Auto Gallery. The gallery is home to some automotive treasures, including a pristine pre-war 1938 BMW 328 Roadster and the 1965 Jaguar E-Type Coupe, dubbed by many as one of the most beautiful cars ever made.

These vintage cars aren’t just for show either, as they’re all available for rent. For BMW fans getting hitched. nothing makes for a better wedding car than a pre-war BMW roadster available here. History buffs might also get a kick out of seeing President Sukarno’s former cars in the gallery, including the rare Soviet-era 1958 Zavod Imeni Likhachyova, a reminder of the close relationship Indonesia enjoyed with the Soviet Union.

Aside from the classic cars, the gallery also sports vintage decor and is a popular wedding photoshoot venue in the city. Do note that since Hauwke’s is a private gallery, they only accept pre-arranged visits and visits are subject to availability.

There’s no greater comfort when you badly need a makeover than knowing that you can have all of your facial and hair treatments done in one spot, and that’s exactly what’s in store at Cipete. Here, ladies can have their me-days at the long-running Itje Her Salon, which has pampered Indonesian women since 1971.

As is the case with the more luxurious salons, Itje Her has different people handling specific duties. However, Itje Her is priced very competitively, with standard haircuts and blowouts starting at Rp. 190,000 (~USD12.93) while comparable salons typically start at Rp. 250,000 (~USD16.93).

For more options, head on over to The Buya building located just a few steps further into Cipete. Here, ladies can have their eyebrows and nails done at Ebrow Atelier while men can visit the Chief Barbershop, offering cuts, washes, massages, and pomade styling services.

When your jeans of choice are handmade in Japan, thought of as the capital of high-quality raw denim of the world, simply going to any random shop for service is a huge no-no. For denim connoisseurs, your sophisticated needs are better served by Jakarta Jeans House.

Far from being a typical permak (sometimes written as vermak) Levi’s, the term given to street vendors offering denim repair services in Indonesia, they even have their own chainstitch sewing machine to work with.

Other than denim repair and alteration services, the workshop also accepts orders for customised denim, including jackets and even raw selvedge jeans.

– Where to stay at Cipete –

Unlike the nearby Kemang neighborhood and its bustling nightlife, Cipete is much more low-key. This gives Cipete the best of both worlds as you could have a quiet evening if you so choose, while Kemang’s hip bars are just a short distance away if you’re looking to mingle with locals and expats.

Accommodation here isn’t as abundant as Kemang but there are still plenty of comfortable beds you can rest on after enjoying what Jalan Cipete has to offer.

1. Little Amaroossa Residence – budget option with a romantic vibe

If a nice, comfortable bed to sleep in is all you need, then you can hardly do better than Little Amaroossa, located right at Jalan Cipete. The boutique hotel is unmistakable from afar as the classical facade stands in contrast with the other buildings in the area.

Rooms start at a very affordable price of Rp. 442,000 (~USD30.08) but you’d be glad to know the hotel doesn’t skimp on the furnishing nor the decor. In fact, we’re a fan of the magenta-tinged decor as the resulting effect makes the hotel an attractive option for romantic staycations.

Where to eat, stay, and things to do in Jalan Cipete

Cipete might not be as famous as its more illustrious neighbour, Kemang, but because it’s less touristy, food and accommodations are priced at reasonable levels. And of course, it helps that the once hard-to-reach neighborhood is now perfectly accessible via MRT.
