Expensive food in a rustic world
Around for a quite some time, Buckaroo is one place you wouldn't know if no one tells you about it. It is nestled in the deep of private houses in Sembawang and has a very American-Mexican feel. I personally feel that it is of cool brilliance for the owner to convert his house to a restaurant at the ground level and he stays just there too with his wife, if I hadn't remember wrongly.
Price of the food, a little on the steep side but overall, food is justifiable. They serve awesome buffalo wings at different level of chilli hotness and have real big, juicy onion rings. For the main course, unless you are a big eater, I would suggest you to share one with your dining mate and indulge more on their side dishes. Their chops and steaks come in real huge portion.
I like coming to Buckaroo as it gives me an all-rounded dining option from main course to desserts to drinks. Alas! I've never had a chance to try the limited options of desserts there as each time, I'll have problem finishing the main course already.
Suburban kind of food
I was brought here by surprise by somebody I know. I was a little suspicious on the car ride there, because I wasn't familiar with this part of Singapore at all. Who knew what types of food lurk in these kind of places?
Buckaroo BBQ and grill certainly surprised me. I wasn't expecting such a place to be found here. The place was packed when we arrived, and there was even a queue formed at the entrance. As it was getting late, many diners were leaving just as many were coming in. Luckily, we found some seats. The ambiance was noisy, and there were a lot of Caucasians around. The atmosphere was hot and sultry although it was night time. It was quite unfamiliar to me, as it seemed like a hawker centre, except that it was the Caucasian version. I actually kind of liked it.
The soup that we ordered came in a bowl made out of bread, which was nice. The soup, clam chowder was just the way I like it, thick and full of clams. The calamaris were disappointing though, they were cold and soggy. Urk. Who likes those? The onion rings were alright.
The main star of the show were the buffalo wings. Not having the ability to down extremely spicy items, we ordered the Level 1 in terms of spiciness and hoped for the best. The buffalo wings were, as the name suggests, gigantic. Unfortunately, they were still a little too hot for me, but I liked the flavour that it had, and although I didn't want anymore, I still wanted another bite. Internal conflict, it was.
One thing about this place is that, if you don't drive, it's hard to get here.
The eatery itself is actually a refurnished house [is it a terrace?]. So if you go there don't expect you can do some shopping or even walking around because all around it is somebody else's home.
Mainly also because of that, this eatery provides a very homely ambience -- cosy, friendly, at ease. The staff there are like your family, the other customers are like your friend. The lady boss gets down to all the work herself too. Attend customers, take orders and clear tables. I was there with 8 other colleagues and so we were a crowd. She came over to attend us and she was very friendly.
Their signature dish was their buffalo wings. There are seven levels of spiciness to choose from and we were ignorant enough to ask for the 7th. Lady boss warned us and insist we just try a 5 and a 3. Very luckily we didn't act stubborn donkeys and did listened to her. I got the burned and swollen sausage lips just by eating the wings at spicy level 3! Hot hot!
And I can't forget the drink I ordered. Root beer float! How long ago did you last drink that? It was served in a unique mug in the design of a shoe/boot. Really cute! I ordered a second [because the wings are so spicy] and eventually I get a pair of "shoes" on the table.
Spice aside, the taste is great for all the food, albeit nothing fantastic.
Fish and Chips, Best!
I came here again on a separate occasion. Well, not for the buffalo wings but for the fish and chips.
I heard it is a good buy. For a price of $19, I don’t mind spending on a good quality of food as long as it is fresh from the kitchen and the quantity tallies the price of what I am paying for.
As usual, the staffs are very cheerful. I really like the setting of this particular place. It has a country like décor, inspired by the western Cowboys and I could see old posters around the restaurant. Although it is more or less an open concept, it does feel breezy around the area.
When my Fish and Chips arrived, I was surprised as to how huge the serving is. I think possibly I can finish it since I am a big fan of fish. But if you are someone who doesn’t eat much, I suggest you can share it with a friend or two. It has a very golden crisp on the outside of the fish. The fries are freshly cooked and it is thicker than the normal French fries out there. The first bite of the fish makes me crave for more bites. The fish is very tender and soft and honestly, it is very juicy. It isn’t that oily but rest assured, the watery feeling that you are tasting is the juice of the fish. Nice to dip in tartar sauce!
Killer Buffalo Wings!
If you are looking for Buffalo Wings of different levels of spiciness, this is a good place. It is quite inconvenient to get there as you have to take a bus down from Sembawang interchange which comes at a frequency of every 30 minutes. It will be good if you are driving as the place is inaccessible.
They have different levels of spiciness for their buffalo wings. Anything above level 3 will be customer’s own decision and risk. My friend is a big fan of buffalo wings and she is into spice. Therefore, she decided to order Level 8, which I am sure I couldn’t even eat the buffalo wings itself.
The staffs are friendly. We came there about 2plus in the afternoon and thus there weren’t much people. There were only me and my friend and another couple dining around.
The buffalo wings came and it looks super red. I could smell the spiciness that I almost wanted to sneeze out. Nevertheless, I gave it a try. At the first bite of the wings, I already taste the spiciness. It is way too spicy. I had to take out what I have eaten and gobbled down a bottle of drink. In fact, a small bottle wasn’t enough for me. But the spiciness is nice. It’s extraordinary and I wonder what kind of sauce they use. I have tried Mad Dog sauce before but this one is a killer.
