It all started when Mr. Say Lip Hai arrived in Singapore from Hainan island and started as a cookboy with the British troops in Sembawang learning how to prepare the perfect roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. After learning the skills, he started his first restaurant, which was called Cola Restaurant and Bar. The restaurant served the British and Commonwealth troops and their families residing in Sembawang neighborhood. Mr. Say Lip Hai's break came when a British housewife tasted the steak prepared by him and suggested that he start a catering business in her husband's pub in Killiney Road. Her husband's name was Jack Hunt. Mr. Say agreed with the condition that he take over the whole operation leading to the birth of the famous Jack's Place Steak House. Jack Hunt sold the business to Mr. Say in 1966. Today, the company is led by an aggressive management team, comprising of 2nd and 3rd generation family members and professional managers.

A little bad experience with the service

Jack's place is a nice restaurant that offers quality for money. Spend around 15 dollars to get the set meals, while the student's meal goes for $6.80 and consists of a drink, starters, the main course and a dessert, very economical.

The only bad experience I've had was a few years back, when I was supposed to celebrate my birthday at Jack's Place. After ordering, we waiting for over 15 minutes with no notice of when the food was supposed to arrive. My mom got up and talked to the manager, who complained that he was on the phone. We walked out of the restaurant, and the manager nonchalantly returned to his phone call.

Other than that, the food here tastes good and the decor is kind of classy.

Past its prime

From the casual eye, the decor at Jack's Place has looks like it has remained unchanged over the years. I mean this literally; the furniture and carpeting looks like it hasn't been replaced since it first opened. Maybe I'm being harsh, but this is what I saw from their Bugis outlet.

Completely devoid of atmosphere, the restaurant is dimly lit and the lacklustre service staff could not possibly have been more disinterested. The tables and layout were reminiscent of the restaurants I would eat at in my childhood. The food still, still passable at best, and the only saving grace of a disappointing meal.

Great service and food

If you're looking for good food, good atmosphere, and good service Jack's Place at Causeway Point Civics Centre will not disappoint. Though there are several 'Jack's Place' restaurants on the island but the one at Civics Centre really stands out.

Even during busy hours, the staff still provides good and meticulous service. It takes a little more less than 5 minutes upon your arrival to get seated and be ready to order, with your ordered food ready to be served in 10 minutes. Although the menu does include some pretty hefty numbers, the quality of the food and service is well worth the price tag, and the trip down.

Cosy and quiet

I visited the outlet at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8 during lunch on a weekend. It wasn't very crowded and we were quickly ushered to our table. I ordered for myself a main of lamb chops, which came with french fries and a baked potato. My order took about 15 minutes to arrive on a sizzling hot plate laden with 3 slabs of lamb. They weren't too small like what I've experienced at other places. The mushroom sauce only served to enhance the flavour of the meat. The baked potato was so huge that it quite literally took up a quarter of my plate. A major plus point was that we could ask for extra toppings of bacon and sour cream, which only made me feel like a guilty glutton. After my meal, I ordered a slice of their Blackforest cake, which turned out to be a sort of an anti-climax. It is obvious that their cakes are kept for display for at least 3 days, which was very evident from the hardness of the layers. A good place for a quiet meal, but do yourself a favour and skip dessert.

Good steak good service

I had my doubts about the place until I tasted the steaks myself and compared them, with their peers around town like Astons for example. The ribeye steak was succulent and tasty and had a tanginess that accentuated the beef’s flavor. The black pepper steak was a bit dry and tough but still retained the beef flavor with the peppery sauce giving it a kick. The sides which were french fries and coleslaw were decent but nothing worth raving about.

The service was rather efficient as well, As we went there on a week day evening, there wasn’t many diners and we were sat down promptly. Ice water was served without us having to ask for it. The waitress who attended to us was extremely patient and gracious while waiting for my friend to make up his mind over which steak set to order. Our food came soon enough with my medium rare steak being exactly like how I wanted it. All in all, their steaks really give Astons a run for their money, but I can’t speak much for their sides though because I still prefer Aston’s pasta salad! But sometimes Aston’s get a little too crowded during meal times and that turns me off. It was pretty decent meal that was not too rough on the wallet.

Just go for the student meal

I love eating at a restaurant while paying for student’s meal; it’s really worth it especially when it cost only $6.80 and additional $1 for soup of the day. Set meal is also available at 12++ for those who are more affluent. What’s more worth it for the student’s meal is that there is still drinks and mini ice cream along with your main course. Just by spending below $10, I get to eat fish fingers, chicken cutlet, spaghetti with beef and chicken sausage, or chicken baked rice. However, there are only four choices available for students to choose.

Even though the type of food is easily available at Kopitam or other air conditional hawker, the price of the food is also the same. By just spending a few more bucks, I get to be at a more relaxed area and be indulging in the meal. If I’m not wrong, student’s meal should be available around 1+pm to 5+pm.

Overall, I could say that the food is acceptable since I’m only paying below 10dollars to be eating inside a restaurant and being served by people.
I would recommended it to students who want to have a place for chit chat and doesn’t want to eat at places that is crowded.

gives a cozy feeling of home

A place for great steaks and cakes for dessert will be Jack’s Place. Although it also sells other main courses, appetizers, desserts and beverages, I still prefer their steak to the other dishes.

I do order the mushroom at times and have grown up drinking it. The standard is constantly fluctuating, made of canned mushroom campbell at times and of thick and creamy soup with button mushrooms on others. This is one of the stalls where I order my steak to be cooked rare, as the slab of meat is fresh. Thus, the meat is still soft and just slightly bloody, despite cooked rare. Choosing the medium or well-done cooked steak will be preferable for those who want the steak to be just nicely cooked. The black forest cake makes a great dessert, as the chocolate chiffon cake is soft and the cream is just slightly sweet. I like eating the cream with the chocolate flakes that coat the sides of the cake most.

The steak menu is the most expensive compared to the others, and the food and beverages at Jack’s Place are otherwise rather affordable. There is rarely a queue at Jack’s Place except during special occasions, and it is preferable to make reservations early for seats.

"Simple and Affordable"

Although you won't find an immaculate level of service or be surrounded a stunning ambience as you would in a top class restaurant, one must admit that Jack's does know how to serve a steak of good quality that surpasses that of many other restaurants.

Priced at an affordable range around $20 per dish, the food is certainly value for money. The steaks are of decent size and they are rather generous with the sides, ensuring that you will always feel satisfied at t he end of the meal.

I have eaten there countless times in my life, frequenting the outlets in Tampines and Ang Mo Kio, and everytime I do so, I have not been let down. The steaks are fresh and of the requested doneness. (tip: always have your steaks medium or rarer. That's how they are meant to be eaten.) Served on a sizzlng hot plate, they will certainly leave you craving for more!!

I would not recommend ordering the steaks accompanied in heavy sauce such as the Black Pepper Steak. The meaty, natural flavour of the meat will likely be drowned out in those dishes. Instead, try something more subtle like the Butter Steak or the Flame Steak (one of my favourites).

Besides the beef steaks, I would not recommend other dishes. I have tried their venison steak before and it failed to impress. Also, the drinks here are rather limited. I have always believed a place with good steak must necessarily have good wine. However, the wine options are extremely limited and are only served by the bottle.

Still, if you do have a craving for affordable yet decent quality steaks, Jack's Place is certainly a must try.

Steak Hell

Jack's place. Check out the throbbing vein on my forehead above my furrowed eyebrows. Both experiences at Century square's outlet (Tampines) were mad frustrating.

Firstly, the seat allocation system is terribly lacking in many areas. We arrived at 715 hoping to get a table for 5. We were told to leave our numbers and assured that the wait will be 15 to 20 min... Only to get our table TWO HOURS LATER, without any phone call informing us for the delay.

To our surprise, we realised many people underneath the list got their seats before us just because 5 is a number too cumbersome to allocate seats to.

The starters, pumpkin soup, tasted burnt (probably it being too long at the bottom of the soup pot) so it got replaced with mushroom soup instead. The main course took another 30 min to arrive. The steak is just as, or even more disappointing. The medium well tasted like a well done while the medium rare is too undercooked. However, their side dishes and array of finger food is up to standard - delectable and value for money.

Service staff are not attentive to the needs of customers. On average, we have to make 3 attempts before catching their attention.

I would absolutely dread to dine at Century Square's Jack Place again. One could argue that they were too busy and short-staffed but considering the small space of the restaurant, improvements should be easier to implement and be in order soon. It's been 2-3 years since my second time at jack's place and the same problems still surfaced.

cold steak

My experience at Jack's Place was below my expectations. Being the steak fiend I am and having heard that it's famous for its steak, I had to go there. I ordered my steak medium-rare and although it was on a slow weekday afternoon, the food took quite some time to arrive. When it arrived, I cut the steak open and found it to be of room-temperature. It was neither warm nor hot. Not a tinge of heat element in the steak. Despite the gravy, the steak was too bland for my liking as well.

I called the waitress over and told her about it. She said she would change the steak for me. After 15 minutes or so, the waitress came back when the same piece of steak (I recognize the place where I cut it). I reckon the steak was just heated up again. By the time the steak arrived the second time, my appetite wasn't there anymore. I was thinking what took them so long when the restaurant is relatively empty? I ordered some side dishes as well but can't remember exactly what they are. Not too fantastic to be remembered.

The steak was priced quite steeply and for the price, I would have expected a satisfying piece of steak. The waiting time is acceptable if the food is delicious, this means that plenty of time is spent of perfecting the food. But in this case, it is not. I still had it sent back despite waiting for so long. The waitress was all smiles when serving me. Thumbs up for that.
