Reasonably good food at reasonable price....
Chanced upon this cafe styled eatery during a stroll at 313 Somerset... the cafe was bright with eye-catching decor colours...and a look at the menu "seduced' us to check out the fares...the food pics looked good and prices budget friendly (at least in Orchard Road)...
Somehow, we can't help comparing this food joint with the long-timed Swensens. The offerings are somewhat similar and geared towards the younger sets and pretty family orientated as well. The service were brisk, waiting staff reasonably polite and no queue needed (during both my dinner visits)...
How about the food ? our baked chicken were done to perfection and juicy still ! (or were we lucky? judging by some negative reviews)... our burger, steak and pasta sets were likewise well presented, nicely done within expectation. For parents with child fussy eaters, you will know the food have "passed the test" when it's finished in quick time...
Is it worth going back again?.... A definite YES !
Best of both worlds!
I've been a fan of Hot Tomato since the first time I tried it. I am personally a big fan of both steak and aglio olio. While at most other resturant which sells both steaks and aglio olio, I am often caught in a dilemma, undecisive of which I should choose. At Hot Tomato, I can have the best of both world, because all the main courses come on top of the aglio olio!
Prices are really reasonable at Hot Tomato, especially so if you are a student! Simply flash your student card on weekdays between 2pm - 5pm and you get to enjoy a main course + soup of the day, at less than $15! Being a student definitely has its perks. I'd say the portion of the aglio olio is definitely a little too small, but then again, I have a whole steak as well, so after devouring the whole plateful, you'll definitely be satisfied. And for the price, I definitely have no grounds for complains.
One thing which can be improved upon there though, would the the space. The booth seats are really small and cramp, so it gets a tad uncomfortable sometimes.
Overall, a great place to dine at with friends and family!

Even more budget than iSteaks
Once I discovered that Hot Tomato was offering a Student Promotion which included Sirloin Steak, I was sold.
Hot Tomato’s Student Deal was one of the most value-for-money deals I had ever come across - sirloin steak with a side of aglio olio, salad, and lime juice for only $9.50 nett! Forget Astons or iSteaks - Hot Tomato was my latest budget steak option. The steak didn’t taste cheap either, and was pretty good for its price. The aglio olio served deserves a mention as well, as it was delectable with just the right amount of spiciness and oiliness.
I’ve had an extremely mediocre experience once with Hot Tomato when I was younger, and never saw it as worth it ever since. But with their Student Promotion, I began finding myself going back, almost weekly, just for a taste of some medium sirloin steak.
Meat and pasta for less than $12!
In Secondary School, when my friends and I felt like having something more atas than McDonalds that wouldn’t break our piggy banks, we would choose Hot Tomato. It’s popular among students simply due to its affordable prices!
My usual order is their Teriyaki Chicken Chop with Aglio Olio which comes with a large slab of tender chicken. The teriyaki sauce is sweet without being overpowering, accompanying the chicken in a well-loved combination. Their aglio oglio is also decent – tossed in oil and seasoned simply, albeit sometimes with too much oil.
With their lunch promotions for students and their relatively cheap dishes, Hot Tomato is easily one of the most affordable places to have a good Western meal in a restaurant setting. I’ll probably be back just for their chicken!
Not very hot amongst Singaporeans
Hot Tomato is a Western mid-range restaurant that has outlets all around Singapore. Their outlets are usually located in malls such as NEX and 313@Somerset. Some items on their menu include mushroom soup (which i love) , grilled poultry - chicken and steak, as well as pasta.
I really like the fish and chips served at Hot tomato as it is cheap and good. Hot tomato offers a student meal of $10 for a main course which includes soup and a drink. However, the quality of their food varies with outlets and the time of the day. I would not recommend Hot Tomato to a family looking for a Western meal as their food is often lacklustre.
Aglio Olio and Steaaaak
"How can this be so affordable?!" was my exact reaction the first time I've tried Hot Tomato. I thoroughly enjoy their Aglio Olio every single time I go there and I pray that there will never be a day where they stop serving it. I'm not very adventurous with my food choices as well, so from the first time I tried a sirloin steak with aglio olio nothing has changed until this day - I'm still ordering medium rare sirloin steak with aglio olio. Sometimes I spice it up by ordering coke instead of ice lemon tea, but yeah.
The thing about Hot Tomato is that you'd expect it to be extremely costly because of their good western food, but it's strangely affordable and nothing is better than affordable good food. Although I think that the reason behind its prices is in the simplicity of everything in Hot Tomato - no frills, nothing too fancy, everything is kept to simple - it's good because it feels like I'm paying for the food and nothing extra. Service wise, they have their good days and they have their bad days. I wouldn't expect excellent service though, for the price I'm paying. Their student meal costs less than 10 bucks!
Haven't tried their other food (unadventurous fellow here) but their steak never disappoints. Never once was I served bad steak, and nothing excites me more than my steak arriving at Hot Tomato. I always find myself eating slowly and savoring the taste of it all. My heart sinks whenever I realize I'm left with a little bit of my steak and I cut it into tiny morsels every time to make the meal last longer. Tell me I'm not the only one! I love my aglio olio with lots of cheese! You have to eat it with the cheese!
I love Hot Tomato, it might possibly be my favourite casual-dining western restaurant. Now as I'm typing, I'm craving for some of that steak and aglio.
Value for Money!
Hot Tomato is a great place for quick, casual meals with friends and family. They have outlets all over the island, a mouth-watering menu and wallet-friendly prices. However, based on personal experience, the quality of service differs from outlet to outlet.
I love the chicken and pasta here. The chicken, to me, is always done just right. Not too mushy, yet not too hard. I can’t say it’s the best I’ve ever had, but it’s not too far down the list. As for the pasta, I like how it’s saltier than usual, making it more tasty, and not too oily. Their fries are good too. Thicker than usual, fried well, and comes in a good portion!
Hot Tomato is known for their promotional set meals. If I’m not wrong, for a little under $10, one can enjoy a filling meal complete with a drink! The ambience here is also cosy and not too noisy. Definitely a place to consider when you haven’t got too much on you but still want a warm, satisfying meal.
affordable, but it's a mixed bag
I ordered a plate of Steak n' Aglio when I visited Hot Tomato last week. At $10.90, such a dish seems like a steal!
However, I found the pasta a little too soft, definitely not al dente as would be ideal. Despite that, I still enjoyed it, as the fragrance of the olive oil came through rather well without being too oily. The mild, slightly tangy orange flavour (perhaps a dash of juice?) was quite surprising, refreshing and welcome.
The steak on the other hand seemed awfully rare, despite me having requested it be medium. The staff apologized profusely for the mistake and sent it back to the kitchen to be cooked once more. While I was impressed by the efficient service, the returned plate of steak was now a tad too tough and closer to well-done.
Overall, the prices are amongst the most affordable in town, but I don't think it's likely that I'll visit again.
Poor Service with horrible attitude from staffs.
Although Hot Tomato serves affordable western food in shopping malls, you get really mediocre service to go with your meal. I had lunch over at one of their outlet in Nex mall and I would say, I will never patronize their restaurant again.
I was with my family looking for a casual place for lunch and we decided on Hot Tomato, the staffs were busy talking among themselves and took about 10 minutes before arranging a table for us to be seated and it was not packed at all. Food was really just moderate, they even had my steak cooked well-done when I had it ordered in medium rare. I approached the staff and she denied in a rude tone that it was well-done and insisted it was medium rare and refused to get it swapped.
This is definitely not a place I'll be visiting again even with the affordable prices.
Affordable western food
My staple at Hot Tomato is always the Teriyaki Chicken Chop which is accompanied by a small portion of aglio olio which is great for days where you want spaghetti with western food! Which really happens all the time for me. The chicken chop is not bad and I love the aglio olio, although it is quite simple, with olive oil, salt and garlic, I think it is delicious. Especially so when it is a complimentary side dish, who can say no to it? Although some say it is oily, I think it is quite okay, it is balanced out with the salad veggies by the side. I remember that fish and chips wasn't nice so ever since, I just stick with the Teriyaki Chicken Chop.
It can be a little squeezy if it is crowded, which it usually is during dinner hours, and people might need to wait. But if you go there slightly earlier, it is not a bad place to dine in.
great steak, mediocre pasta
Hot Tomato offers a filling, Western meal for students at 9.50 nett during lunch hours. I tried their Sirloin Steak with Aglio Olio, and was served an Iced Lemon Tea as part of the set meal that I ordered. The bright, fun colours and cute graphics of the place were quite friendly, but felt rather garish after a few visits. Service staff were, as always, efficient and courteous, however I was slightly put-off by the way they hollered across the room to their colleagues.
Maybe I've got rather high standards, but I found that their aglio olio tasted only of salt, and oil, with far too much of the latter, leaving my mouth feeling unpleasantly greasy. There was a hint of garlic, but no onions or anything else to add taste. I wasn't expecting much for the steak, but it was cooked Medium Rare, just as I had ordered it, and its texture was perfect! It tasted fantastic, and it was quite a generous serving. Iced tea wasn't outstanding, though.
Overall, Hot Tomato's still one of my favourite places to go when I'm craving some meat, or Western food, its main draw being its affordability.
Good Service Bad Food
I give this cafe a low rating because the food is not up to standard. It is specifically a "grill" cafe but their grilled food just doesn't make the cut!
I had a salmon with mango salsa while my friend had the grilled pork and sausage. The salmon was really tough and dry and there was no hint of salsa in the meagre amount of sauce they gave. The pork was also tough. The only thing nice about the dish was the side salad, which had a tangy lime dressing.
Overall unsatisfactory food but good and responsive staff. Not worth the $15 paid for each main course!
