I stumbled across Rokeby while originally intending to go to Wimbly Lu, and it has now became one of the places I go to when I feel like treating myself to a good weekend brunch nearby. The Australian-inspired bistro is clean with chill vibes, perfect for a calming morning.
The very first time I went to Rokeby, I ordered their Portobello Benedict and was blown away by how their Portobello was succulent and plump, and went remarkably well with the brioche bread. Unfortunately, the last time I went and ordered the same thing, I was sorely disappointed to see a rather shrivelled-looking downsized version of the Portobello Benedict.
Thankfully, the quality of their Fruits and Nutella Waffles remained constant despite having changed in shape. (It used to be rectangular, nowadays it’s the circle waffles cut into quadrants.) Their waffles were crispy on the outside but able to remain fluffy on the inside, and was served with a generous helping of nutella and fruits. One of the better waffles I’ve tried!
While it’s difficult to locate, Google Maps will save you. Rather than walking over from Saerangoon MRT, try to walk from Lorong Chuan MRT. I personally find that it’s easier to locate that way!
I just went to Rokeby for a light dinner and was really impressed by them.
First and foremost, they have the best fish and chips that I have ever tasted for quite some time! The fish tasted really fresh, light and soft. And it isn’t as oily as some other restaurants or cafes that I have tried. The dish is also plated creatively and hence, yes, ideal for photo-taking! Their other dishes were alright but they still pale in comparison with my fish and chips.
Their pricing is pretty standard. Their normal mains are slightly below 20 dollars and coffees are priced around 5 dollars, like other cafes and restaurants. Good thing is there’s no GST and service charge. Oh, and you can upgrade your fries to truffle fries for just two dollars!
I also love that the place is only 1/3 filled with customers when I was there (weekday dinner hours). Hence, it isn’t as crowded as their neighbours - Cajun King and Wimbly Lu, which means no queuing!
I would definitely go back again when I need a cosy area with good fish and chips.
Worth to try
My friends and I were deciding between Wimbly Lu and Rokeby and since we have planned on getting ourselves some proper meal, we chose the latter.
When I first entered the store, I felt completely welcomed by the staffs as they handed the menu over for us to browse through. We ordered a grilled burger and a plate of carbonara to share as the portion seemed too large for us to finish a plate on our own.
The carbonara was simply delicious as compared to the average burger. The prices are reasonable and hence, we would re-visit Rokeby again to try out the other dishes that we have missed out.
Last but not least, what left a deep impression on me was the wooden 'plate' that they used to serve the burger. Unfortunately, I did not manage to take a picture of it as I could not wait to try the food!
Saw this place listed in a magazine and was immensely attracted by the picture of The Full Monty Breakfast and decided to come here on a Sunday with family. Decor was nice and interesting.
I guess the most interesting part about this place is the fact that they don't charge GST/service charge and tipping is optional. So whatever prices you see listed on the menu are exactly what you pay. Consequently, service was also prompt and friendly.
I, of course, had the Full Monty Breakfast and while the serving didn't look huge, it was definitely filling. I liked the scrambled eggs the best. Definitely value-for-money given the portion size and quality of food.
Other items that were ordered include the Foie Gras egg benedict, Portobello egg benedict, waffles and sausage. They serve Artisanal coffee as well :D these items are only on the weekend brunch menu, so go there on weekends if you want to try them.
I guess the drawback about this place is that it's a bit difficult to get to without driving.
Ambience over Food
We were choosing between Wimbly Lu & Rokeby since they're along the same stretch, and decided for the latter because we wanted some proper food for lunch. Was actually looking forward to coming here because it looked so promising, and I had some pretty positive reviews about it online.
We reached there at 12.30pm, and were very disappointed to know that their weekday brunch menu was only available till 12pm. Couldn't make up my mind on what to get, so I settled on a grilled chicken burger in the end. It wasn't a fast food kind of patty but real protein-packed chicken that was grilled to perfection. The burger buns were also buttered nicely and perfectly fluffy. Guess they weren't lying about serving gourmet food. I didn't finish my fries though, it felt like too much!
They have daily weekday lunch promotions, and for Wednesdays, lady customers get to have either the Chocolate Lava Cake or Sticky Date Pudding at 50% off, which amounts to about $3. We decided to get one of each. Because Sticky Date Pudding is always so highly raved and I've never ordered one myself, I was actually pretty excited to get it. It was slightly overly sweet though and I actually felt kinda sick eating it after a couple of bites. The caramel drizzled over it kind of pushed the sweetness over the edge too much maybe? I don't know, but I don't see myself ordering Sticky Date Pudding even at anywhere else after this.
I thought the Chocolate Lava was pretty awesome though! Decadent chocolate overflowing with gooey goodness (Y)
