Translated as Friends in Swedish, Vänner is the place for NTU students to enjoy a wide range of western cuisine and chill out over a few tipples or coffee. The bistro operates from 8am onwards and happy hour prices for alcoholic drinks are available in the evening.

Away from the hustle and bustle
Vanner Bistro is located in the most unlikely place in NTU -- the Nanyang Auditorium, where most students take their examinations. Even with so many students streaming in and out of the auditorium, the cafe is not well-known among the students, owing to the fact that it is tucked inconspicuously behind a glass door. Furthermore, one must climb a flight of spiral stairs in order to reach the cafe. That said, I'm happy that it shies away from the hustle and bustle of the school, especially during lunch hours where there will be hordes of students in the main canteen. Also, what's more fun than discovering a 'hidden' hangout to chill out with friends?
I loved the interior of the cafe. The ambience of the cafe resembles that of a bar, with a small stage for a live band to play. They have a wide variety of Swedish cuisine, but they don't come cheap. The price range of $10-20 is considered on the steep side for a meal in school. I thought that the smoked salmon wrap that I ordered, which came with garden salad, was satisfactory but the dish was too small a portion for me.
Overall, I think it is a good place in school to chill out with friends. There is no other place in the school that looks like that. Enter the restaurant and you would feel as though you just stepped out of NTU. However, because it is a tad overpriced for a school meal, I wouldn't have it regularly. If you're from NTU and haven't tried it, no harm giving it a shot!
