Loysel's Toy is located very far from where I stay and if it wasn't for my friend who was craving a good cup of coffee (she swears by Loysel's coffee) and insisted we go there for brunch, I will never find myself coming to this place. This cafe is hard to locate so make sure you have your GPS/ iOS and Google maps ready otherwise you might lose your way! Because of its hard -to-locate location, it is thus quiet and relatively peaceful for chats and chill-out sessions with your best friend. We were there on a weekday afternoon and it was relatively empty, except for us and another table of two having their brunch as well.
My friend ordered her usual cup of coffee and we ordered Breakfast Pancakes to share. I don't drink coffee so I cannot comment on it but the whole place does smell of coffee beans, not sure if I like it. Anyway, onto the breakfast pancakes, I was utterly disappointed by the pancakes. It was bland, thick, flour-y and everything that The Perfect Pancake will frown upon... I tried to mask the bad consistency by drowning it in maple syrup. The eggs were bland and the smoked salmon didn't taste fresh. My friend did not like it as well. We left the place feeling hungry and I was disappointed while she was satisfied with the coffee.. I wouldn't recommend this place for proper and good food (I have learnt to lower my expectations for cafe food since then) but if you're looking to have a good chat over a cup of coffee at a serene environment, I guess this place is not too bad for that.
Sit and Chat
I've been to Loysel's Toy several times and I absolutely love the ambiance there. It is the perfect place for you to catch up with a friend that you haven't seen for a while. I had a very slow, relaxed and lovely afternoon catching up with a friend there.
My friend ordered me a cup of iced coffee and a croissant. The iced coffee was a little strong because I'm more of a mocha kind of person but the croissant was actually really good.
The cafe is located in a very ulu building that you may take some time to find if you are unfamiliar with the place. It is also quite a distance from the nearest MRT. However, it is located in the same building as ukuelele movement is and the ukulele movement site does provide you with good instructions to assist you in getting there.
Cozy Cafe With Great Coffee, Average Food
The out-of-the-way location of Loysel's Toy is part of the appeal of the place, as it's relatively quieter than most other cafes. Named in homage after the father of the commercial coffee machine, Edward Loysel De Santais, Loysel's Toy lives up to their name by producing some of the best cups of coffee in Singapore.
Ambience at Loysel's Toy is laid back, and quiet. Located beside the relatively peaceful Kallang River Park, Loysel's Toy plays off the natural surroundings with wooden furniture, simple maritime signboards, and clean lines. Great place for a slow meal.
Service at Loysel's Toy is decent. Orders at taken at the counter, although your food is served to you. Staff are young, mostly students working part-time, and the service reflects this. Don't expect much conversation, or product knowledge.
Food at Loysel's Toy is generally decent. Not as tasty or as value-for-money as other places though. The menu at Loysel's Toy focuses on brunch items, as well as pastries. I find the pastries here to be of better quality than most of their main brunch dishes.
The Breakfast Pancakes is a hearty dish of 2 fluffy pancakes, maple syrup, butter, 2 chicken sausages, scrambled eggs, with an order of smoked salmon. The eggs were nicely cooked but slightly bland, a little more seasoning or herbs would have lifted it. The pancakes were decent in taste, but I thought the size was too thick.
However, the coffee at Loysel's Toy is great. Supplied by the famed Papa Palheta, the quality and taste of the coffee is rich. The skill of the baristas is also evident in the intricate Latte Art they produce.
Perfect Place for Coffee & Chat
Loysel's Toy, another cafe from Papa Palheta, offers undoubtedly good coffee.
This place has a very nicely decorated interior with old-school furnishings and pieces. It has a small air-conditioned indoor section, with a much larger outdoor one. Despite its location, there was quite a crowd for a mid-week afternoon, and there were even students mugging there. I attribute this to the brightly lit place - there was much sunshine coming in, unlike some other cafes which are very dark inside. The sunshine shining in puts you in a bright & chirpy mood.
We ordered a piccolo latte & cappucino each, and both came with a coffee cookie. I liked the fact that they threw a cookie in like an awesome afterthought kinda thing. There were some awesome cake selections at the counter, and the friendly staff made the place feel very homely and laidback.
The next time I'm back, I would be sure to check our their breakfast selections, as recommended by some friends. Too bad we didn't have enough stomach space for it that afternoon!
Caffeine plus scenery equals bliss
You can't go wrong with a caff that serves Papa Palheta coffee, and Loysel's Toy is no exception. Unlike Dr Koh and his wife, I don't even own half a car. This makes Loysel's quite a trek for the likes of me. Four wheels good, two legs bad.
Anyway, if I am able to hitch a ride with any mate that drives around tea break time, I would make it a point to head to Loysel's. It precisely its off-the-beaten-track location in a charmingly decrepit old building that lends it its charming, laid back ambience.
Sipping a cuppa in a park overlooking the water. That's the life, eh!
My friends and I needed a place to chill out and Loysel's Toy came into mind. When it was first suggested, I, who never heard of it before, thought it was a toy store. Subsequently, I was told that it is a small cafe that served really good tea and coffee.
So we made our way there. Since my friend had a car, there wasn't much problem getting there. What's with all these secluded cafes that require certain kinds of transport anyways? I guess that's what you get when you want a quiet environment away from the world.
Upon arrival, my friends shared a pot of tea and I had a chocolate croissant. The tea came in a pretty pot along with a small cookie. It smelt really nice, but I'm not so much of a tea and coffee person, so I shan't comment much. My croissant was really delicious though! It crumbles in your mouth and then the chocolate greets your taste buds straight after. Should have ordered another one!
inacessible but great coffee and sandwiches
It was a long walk from the Lavender MRT station to reach the restaurant. However, I was happy that my friend brought me to this unique and chic restaurant. It offered mainly sandwhiches, salads and cakes. They also served good coffee and hot chocolates too!
The layout of the restaurant is rather small. It cannot contain too many people indoors. That was what happened during my last visit. We had to sit outdoors despite having to have walked for so long. Luckily, the weather was forgiving and we did not have to eat with streaming beads of perspiration.
The location is also actually the reason why I like this place. Being situated further from the main roads, it offers a more quiet and serene environment for small gatherings. Coupled with great coffee, I am sure this will soon be my frequent hangout! (:
Good and valued for money coffee
Loysel's is located at near lavender and could be quite inaccessible for those who do not drive. However, due to its inaccessibility, there isn't much crowd on a weekday afternoon and is one of my favorite place to have a nice hot coffee with a book, or have a chat with a friend over coffee. I usually order their latte which costs $4.50. It isn't very expensive especially when it tastes really good and it comes with a slice of biscuit. It isn't too sweet nor too milky nor too thick. It's the kind of latte that I like.
Their hot chocolate is good too! Though the price is on the higher side at $6.50 each. They do sell croissants and cakes which were alright.
Overall, Loysel's a very cosy and pleasant place which sells good coffee at an affordable price.
