Decent food in a rather hidden location
I stumbled across the Buddy Hoagies at Bukit Timah and it was quite the find.
The food was pretty good and was not too crowded. I was desperately looking for food at the Bukit Timah Shopping Centre and there it was. I ordered a plate of grilled salmon that came with a side of fries. It wasn't anything that blew me away, but the time for preparation was certainly impressive! 5 minutes for a demanding stomach can be rather pleasing.
Although I must say that this was probably because there weren't too many people in the restaurant. Probably not because people hate it, but because people don't know about it. It's at the basement level and not many people even go to bukit Timah shopping centre. So I would have to say that their location's acting as a disadvantage to them. But hey, that's good for us right?
Affordable quality grill
During my recent trip to Buddy Hoagies, I ordered the Steak & Cheese Hoagies Sandwich. I usually order the pepper grilled chicken which I am totally satisfied over. Chicken is tender, of reasonable portion and the peppery taste provided a nice "kick" to the chicken. I really liked the pepper chicken but was looking for a change, hence the steak sandwich! The steak sandwich was not how I expected it to be though. The steak was a little dry, but I liked the melted cheese in the sandwich! It would have been better if the steak was handled more carefully and moist. Nevertheless, it wasn't too bad. I wouldn't order this again though! I would recommend the chicken dishes over the steak dishes.
The ambience is totally relaxing and service was great! Not much crowd on a weekday night which makes it peaceful to have dinner at. There are several drink choices and the shakes looked yummy. I would be sure to try that next time! Overall, Buddy Hoagies is a place that serves affordable American food without compromising on quality or portion, it is better tasting than Astons as well.
Cheap american diner.
Though i still love my Cafe Cartel. It has always been my favorite cheap american dining place to go, with smacking delicious ribs falling off the bone.
Knowing this place hidden in a pretty ulu shopping mall, Dad and I checked out what they had to offer. A little part of me hoped that they would be on par with Cafe cartel so it would be my to go place for some hearty american grub. But alas, it still couldn't be on par. The ribs had too little meat, as though the pig was rather malnourished before its slaughter. The bbq sauce didn't have the kick either. The sides were okay, nothing much to scream about.
Then we ordered the dessert, which was a brownie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, which was actually the best thing of the meal. I wouldn't mind revisiting them again, for their cheap prices.
Great food and atmosphere- perfect for gatherings with friends!
Buddy Hoagies is a hidden gem in E!hub.
From the outside, Buddy Hoagies doesn’t look like much, what with its mismatched chairs and faded, retro vibe. But if you give it a chance, the food will blow you away.
I’ve been a loyal customer of Buddy Hoagies since my secondary school days. I studied in Hai Sing Catholic School, which is just a stone’s throw away from E!hub. Thus, my friends and I would usually head to Buddy Hoagies after school to have lunch and hang out. Their prices are affordable, and the food is great.
My favourite dish there is the Grilled Pepper Chicken with mac and cheese and baked potato. The pepper sauce is perfection – tasty and spicy, but not overwhelmingly so. The chicken is tender, and goes great with the pepper sauce. Their baked potato is done just right, to give that melt-in-your-mouth texture, and their mac and cheese is so addictive! I would also recommend their desserts, especially the apple crumble. It’s not too sweet or too sour – perfect with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Apart from the food, I also love the ambience at Buddy Hoagies. Its atmosphere is perfect for gatherings with friends and family, and till today, it’s still my favourite go-to casual dining restaurant in the East!
To be honest, I'd never heard of Buddy Hoagies Cafe and Grill until a couple of days ago when I was out with my friends at the E-Hub at Pasir Ris. We were looking for a place that served good food at affordable prices and that's when we stumbled upon this place.
The smell of french fries hovered in the air as we sat at our tables, making our tummies grumble in anticipation.
What I liked best about the place was it's ambience. It was very comfortable and simple, with oldies playing on the speakers and portraits of famous artistes from the 80's hanging on the walls. Nothing like most cafes and restaurants that are so stiffly and formally decorated that you feel obliged to act sophisticated.
I had the Grilled Pepper Chicken with a side of Mac & Cheese and Coleslaw. And I have to admit that it tasted great. The chicken was tender and juicy, and sides were delicious. However I felt that one thing I didn't like so much was the portion size. I mean, I was quite disappointed when the food arrived. That's all I get for paying $8.90? Not to mention there was service charge.
On the other hand, the staff provided lovely service. They were very patient and kind. Not in the least bit rude.
Buddy Hoagies serve decent food, and is a place that offers very good value. One can get a set meal at around 10 dollars a person, with prices ranging up to 17 for the more 'premium' items such as steak.
The ambience is nothing to rave about, and it is situated in an old building that is slowly becoming destitute. However, they do have several cool pictures of old bands and records. It tries to give off a retro feel which isn't really pronounced.
Anyway, they leave out cold water and warm water on a table for you to grab yourselves if you want, which was a refreshing change from all the places that charge money for plain ol' water.
Do try the Rösti, but I'd recommend you to stay away from the salmon alfredo. Mine was plain and lacking in flavor, and the alfredo sauce tasted kinda funny.
Good food at good price
One word - impressive. Buddy Hoagies is a paradise for HaiSians. After school, you would see many students clad in their turquoise blue uniform heading towards buddy hoagies. Prices are crudely, very cheap for the quality of their food. The student's meal comes with an ice lemon tea for a price of only $5.90, or $6.90 for 'executive' food.
Their service is speechless. There was this one incident when both my friends mixed up their order. The waiter remembered their individual order and managed to sort things out. Food are usually served within fifteen minutes.
The ambiance is set in the late 1980s. Walls are filled with retro-style pictures only my parent's generation would admire. Good place to reminisce past memories for the X generation!
Great Western food at affordable prices
I declare Buddy Hoagies my newest dining haunt!
I visited the branch at Downtown East, and although it may not be very visible to most leisure shoppers, as the cafe is tucked away outside, in a pretty much obscure corner, I certainly didn't regret my dining experience there.
I have to admit, I was attracted into Buddy Hoagies by their affordable prices - a plate of pasta costs only around $8, which is certainly a refreshing change from the all too typical overpriced pasta served at other restaurants. Drinks are relatively affordable at Buddy Hoagies as well - while some really upmarket restaurants tend to charge about $5 for a mere cup of soft drink, the prices of drinks at Buddy Hoagies are generally kept at below $3.
Buddy Hoagies attempts to present a vintage charm to its interior, and it nearly succeeds - with the rows of various pictures of famed bands in the '90s and '80s framed up on the wall, and with cheesy pop music blasting from its loudspeakers. However, the only thing that ruins this vintage flair would be the baby corner tucked away at the side of the restaurant. That said, I do suppose the baby corner is pretty useful as it keeps the toddlers amused with the toys while waiting for their food, though it really sets the restaurant back a little in terms of its decor.
The food at Buddy Hoagies is a little better than average. My salmon pasta came warm, and rich in alfredo sauce, which is certainly a rare sight, as most Western restaurants tend to scrimp on the amount of sauce that they dish out.
That said, the service can be a little slow. I headed to Buddy Hoagies at around 8.30pm for my dinner, and my pasta was only served at around 9.15pm, despite the fact that my friend and I placed our orders relatively quickly, and there were only a few other occupied tables in the restaurant at that time.
Certainly an affordable restaurant with passable food to try if you're not rushed for time!
Aston's younger brother
i frequent this place for many different occasions.. birthday celebrations, dinner, studying or just chillin' out. it's a slow-paced cafe, spacious, easy-going staff. it's a place you'd want to hang around for a long time..
the food is great, value for money i'd say. even the higher grades of beef steaks cost below $20. seems to me this is a cheaper alternative of the famous Aston's. most of their meat are charboiled, making it a healthier choice yet indulging in the smoky barbecue flavour. the refreshing iced lemon tea and mushroom soup are both home made, and they taste natural too. the cheese baked rice has a creamy-like texture, the kind you can stretch the cheese up above your head like holding a slice of pizza. other recommendations are the western bbq chicken, grilled salmon and baked potato.
My favourite cafe
Buddy Hoagies is, by far, my all-time favourite cafe! When I first stepped into it, I was immediately struck by all my senses; the retro settings, soft indie songs played and savoury smell diffusing from the kitchen were all irresistible. I simply adore the fact that their food served are the freshest I could get anywhere, and that none of the food are from those frozen packs being microwaved. I love their Pan Fried Fish best!
As a student, this place has a considerably conducive environment and with the most affordable set meals - the standard $6.50 for all students on weekdays! In addition, GST charges are absorbed and no service charges are imposed! Perfect for students, I would say.
