When I arrived at Spruce Phoenix Park, admittedly I was worried. We were the only ones in the whole restaurant, four days before christmas when I thought that it would be one of the busiest times of the year. However, as the meal progressed, my worry turned into confusion, as the food was delicious and the staff were on a whole new level of friendly and polite.
I had chicken as my main and quite possibly the best meringue and ice cream that I have ever had. The meringue was warm and crumbled beautifully underneath the vanilla ice cream, a perfect way to end the meal. Spruce’s menu combines Italian favourites with American flavours, which in my eyes is a winning combination for this beautifully located and decorated restaurant.
The food was delicious, the staff were polite and charming, and it was a beautiful venue. Why it was so quiet that night remains a mystery, all I can hope is that it is not normally that deserted. The price is a little on the high side, but for the quality of the food that you get and the experience that comes with it, it is more than worth it.
Coffee smells nice but doesn't taste as good
I know it is such an odd title but I honestly had such high expectations for my latte based on the coffee aroma which filled the place. However, upon sipping on my Joe, I was disappointed. The beans was over-roasted and the milk too light. Bleh.
The food is just alright, nothing spectacular although the mac and cheese stood out. Oh and the chips too! The ambience was amazing though, extremely relaxing and lazy, perfect for a Sunday brunch be it for dates or catching up with friends.
Do make a reservation beforehand if you wish to sit in the air-conditioned areas as they tend to be rather packed.
Nice service, ambience
I've been here only once, really, and it was on a rainy evening.
When I came in, the service staff helped set aside my umbrella on their initiative, so that's already created a positive first impression even if it were just a small gesture.
I sat indoors because of the weather, clearly. Large framed pictures of what I think could be Tibet or Cambodia adorn the walls, and lit candles were placed on each table. Quite a relaxing atmosphere, I'd say.
I ordered a Roasted 'Pullet' Chicken - it is about half a chicken in what I think was garlic and rosemary veloute sauce, and it came with broccoli and mashed potato. I thought the chicken was rather tender but a little bland on its own, so I had to keep smothering it with the sauce, and then it was quite delightful. The plain water they served seemed to have a little fishy taste, but I can't be sure.
While I haven't tried the other menu items and the wine they have here, I suppose this place gets more points for its service and ambience than for its food.
Not the best breakfast one can have
I have always wanted to dine at Spruce ever since the opening of their new branch at the Bukit Timah old fire station but I never got the chance to do so. Finally, my family and I decided to visit Spruce for brunch on Deepavali. We were expecting to see a long queue as it was a public holiday but we were led to our seats within minutes! We ordered a Spruce Big Brekkie and a Spruce Signature Burger to share.
The Spruce Big Brekkie consists of scrambled eggs, bacon strips, baked potato, baked tomatoes, german sausage, sautéed mushrooms and toasts. It was very well presented and definitely looks appetizing. However, the first bite into the scrambled eggs disappointed me. The eggs were mildly warm, and slightly tasteless. The german sausage was too salty for my liking and the potato was too hard, as thought it was under cooked. Rather disappointing dish. The burger was not bad though. The beef patty was juicy and soft. However, the portion was a little too small for $18.
Spruce at Bukit Timah may not be one of my favorite breakfast place but I may be back there to try out their lunch and dinner menu again.
Not too bad
Spruce is a nice place if you have too much cash to spare and/ or if you're a vegan.
Everything here is very healthy. There's greens in every dish and even if it's a dish not meant to be healthy (burgers or steal related main courses), they'd substitute some sauce of sorts for something healthy. For people like me who hate the healthy, this place offers nothing solid.
The desserts here, whoa.
I haven't tried enough but I came with a friend and we were deciding between cheesecake and chocolate and we both decided to go with something strange - we ordered Bomb Alaska. And it was the best decision of our night.
It was something out of a fairy-tale. The dish was a single scoop of ice cream coated in roasted meringue and god was it good. Me and a friend were sharing and we were both trying to be courteous but it's difficult maintaining that while snatching for the lion's share so we gave up.
We ate quick and ordered another, and this time there was no social shame. We ate and drank and contented ourselves with the music.
A nice place to hang out after 8,.
Great service, great food!
Visited this place for lunch on a weekend and it was not crowded at all. Lots of parking space and it is tucked away behind tangling mall area.. Usually I will drive pass this place and not look at it a second time.. As from the driver's point of view, it does not appear to be an eating place. It's situated slightly uphill and much of it is hidden. I knew about this place through a food blog.
Great service staffs! We were greeted very politely and given a choice to sit outdoors or indoors. We sat indoors and i like the place a lot. Nothing fancy, simple and the layout of this entire place was just right. The food were sumptuous albeit the price is on the higher side but it was worthwhile. We had their pasta and it was well cooked with generous toppings.
Desserts were very yummy. We wanted to try all of their desserts on display after trying their chocolate cake. However, we were too full to be able to do that as the food portion was slightly bigger than usual. After our meal, we were asked if the food was good etc. very heart warming gesture and it's like this place really puts their customers first.
I will definitely return again soon
