NTUC tie-up the major differentiator
I really see no difference between petrol companies in Singapore or most other places in the world for that matter. The prices of petrol and diesel here is the same everywhere so filling up you tank really doesn't matter at all.
So to attract motorists, companies used to offer substantial discounts, membership schemes etc. But I think the best way to attract motorists is to give them another reason to visit the stations other than to pump up.
I love Esso stations with NTUC marts built-in simply for the reason that I find the prices of goods there are much cheaper compared to the 7-eleven stores at Shell stations. The NTUC marts also carry a much greater range of goods.
So, for me Esso or Mobil stations are viable choices.
Petrol Kiosk / Bakery
I remember when Esso's mascot was a tiger. They used to hand out tiger tail toys for pumping at their stations. My dad used to collect them for us as kids. Sadly, the tiger mascot seems to have disappeared today.
Their marts, however, have really been upgraded. I would say that they have some of the nicest marts of all the petrol kiosks in Singapore. Aside from the usual offering of magazines, drinks, and snacks, I like how they have tied up with Polar Puffs & Cakes to offer a mini bakery in their marts. Its always refreshing to step into their marts and breathe in the smell of pastries, croissants and swiss rolls.
This is where I pumped petrol
Many years ago, I did a comparison of all the discounts and loyalty programmes the different credit card companies and petrol companies offered.
At that time, the best discount came from DBS Esso card together with Smiles card. Since then, I had only pumped at Esso. I am not a car junkie so I cannot differentiate the power that petrol from petrol companies can deliver so only the price matters to me. As for the loyalty programmes, I do not want to earn points to exchange for gifts, I would rather earn points to exchange for petrol. Smiles card allow me to do this.
Another attraction of Esso is they sell Polar puffs and cakes in some of the stations. These always smell good when you enter the petrol stations.
