For a clean and green Singapore!
One of the organisations I worked with when I participated in the Citibank-YMCA Youth for Causes programme in 2011 was Nature Society (Singapore). For this project, groups of youths like me and my team get to choose 1 or more social organisations to raise funds in support for their causes.
In my opinion, the importance of the environment in today's society is being downplayed in the relentless drive towards economic growth, development and hence material wealth. The very soul of the planet, critical for sustaining life, is being relentless ripped out throughout the globe. Ironically, it is the very organisms that they sustain ripping them out. Hence, my friends and I took on environment as our cause, and Nature Society's goals convinced us to throw our support behind them.
Firstly, I feel that what they are doing is indeed significant. In 2011, the KTM Railway made headlines when it was shut down, and a big battle was on to protect the green corridor along it. Moreover, Nature Society is involved in projects such as protection of Kranji Marsh, which has a personal touch with me given that I used to enjoy watching crabs scuttling around the coral reefs there.
Another point to commend Nature Society on is their repertoire of programmes in which one can contribute to protection of the environment within one's own means. It has a strong volunteer and outreach programme which encapsulates environmental studies, a committee on the issue of conservation and numerous others.
A worthy organsiation definitely worth our support!
