The cream puff specialist

Cream puffs should never have been a cafe or bakery thing. Beard Papa made it a quick snack that you can just grab and go, and I am so grateful to them for doing that.
Their puffs are everything I love about cream puffs, freshly baked, airy and crispy crust, filled with thick creamy insides that oozes out with every bite. That could be the reason why they call themselves Beard Papa - their puffs give you a cream beard.

Some of their store have specialties too. The outlet a Central at Clark Quay shares a storefront with Ya Kun Kaya Toast has a special Kaya flavour. Definitely worth a try, you won’t find it at anywhere else.

Soft and fluffy filling

Beard Papa – one of the best cream puffs in town. I used to stop by and get their original vanilla cream puff. Best served chilled, the cream puff is slightly smaller than the size of one’s palm. Its cream filling is always so fluffy and it will leave me asking for a second serving.

Beard Papa then launched the Mango Yoghurt Ice Cream Puff – my current favourite. You will not believe its goodness until you try it. It is perfect for mango lovers, similar to having mango ice-cream, just that this is the puff version. Each puff is filled with a generous amount of fillings as well as sprinkled with a thin layer of dusting sugar on top of it.

They have got éclairs and cream puff of other flavours too. Though one of the slightly pricier alternative for a pastry, go get one and you will realize why.

Custard Lover's dream come true

I was introduced to Beard Papa by a friend who has a wacky sense of taste so i was a little apprehensive when I first agreed to try. I was thinking what could go wrong, it's just custard cream and bread. It's not! It's heaven. The second you sink your teeth into one of the icing-sugar-dusted puffs, you will instantly be transported to a world of custard bliss. The creme is super soft and the best part is that it's not too sweet unlike many other puffs in the market.

The price, which seems an issue among many Singaporeans, is perfectly justified in my opinion. It does seem pathetic to pay 3 bucks for a tiny puff but the taste and experience is unbeatable. You have to try.

There are many flavours to choose from. You could play it safe by getting original or you could get experimental and try green tea. They also come in doughnut forms.

Cream puffs are a must have!

Beard Papa was first introduced to me when I was still a child, probably when I was about 10. I remember the day when I went window shopping with my friend and her mother. We ended up at the basement of Ngee Ann City Plaza. Then her mother asked me, “Have you tried the cream puffs from Beard Papa?” I shook my head and was wondering what ‘Beard Papa’ was.

She immediately bought an original cream puff for me and one for my friend. I thanked her and started digging into the puff. The cream from within oozed out and surprised me as it wasn’t that sweet, but it was sweet enough for a pastry. The cream was so smooth and well... Creamy! I wolfed down the whole puff and was so satisfied.

Till today, Beard Papa’s cream puff is still one of my guilty pleasures and I’ve introduced it to so many of my friends. Everyone loves it. Also, a new (from back then when I was 10) discovery I made over the year is their tiramisu stick. It too is very creamy, but not too much for a pastry. The powder is scattered evenly throughout the pastry.

I would always make an effort to stop by for some Beard Papa whenever I’m at Ngee Ann City Plaza. It’s a great place to pleasure the occasional sweet tooth!

Overpriced treats

Beard Papa's cream puffs kicked off a cream puff craze back when it first started. Now, I still think that Beard Papa is overrated.

Yes, the original puffs are good. If you get them cold, sinking your teeth into the custard is pure bliss! But the chocolate puffs are just average, the flavour doesn't come out strongly. They should have a higher percentage of chocolate for a more appealing colour and flavour.

But I don't know if the price justifies the pleasure? The last time I bought it, there was a Groupon promotion, one-for-one boxes of Beard Papa cream puffs. That took the sting away from the $3-per-piece (somewhere around there) price.

My take: try them, if you feel the price is justified, then enjoy your cream puffs!

Just Can't Get Enough!

Those who ever pass by Beard Papa's Cream puff shop without giving a try, you are definitely missing out this delicious treats! They are simply the best pastries that I have ever tried since I was young till now. But the taste is still there, back in those days when I was young they didn't have more flavors such as strawberries and chocolate cream puffs, but only featuring the best selling Vanilla cream puff.

The Vanilla cream puff have a crispy and soft bread skin that covers the cream inside of it, just one bite and the fillings of vanilla cream gets into your mouth, while typing out this review, simply makes me drool. The vanilla was not too sweet and just at the right flavors of sweetness, and its very creamy and juicy.

After one bite, will make you keep wanting more. But nowadays Beard Papa is more daring to try out more different flavors such as the strawberry and chocolate flavors which are also my favorites, and also making more different kinds of pastry which I have yet to try, because I only went there for the awesome cream puffs.

If my review doesn't sound convincing to you, then you really have to go and try it out yourself as soon as possible!

Won't stop just at one

If you ever pass by Beard Papa's stall, make sure you get cream puffs for yourself, be it take away or eat-on-the-go. When I first tasted the original vanilla puff, I was already in love with it. Now, despite more innovative flavours offered, I would still opt for their original vanilla puff.

The outlier layer of the puff is so chewy and crispy, the filling is generous, creamy ( but not too creamy) and not overly sweet. It definitely can be a great breakfast to go along with your tea or coffee, or can also be our afternoon snacks. Each vanilla cream puff would cost around $2.20 ( I am not sure if the price has gone up). Different flavours would have different pricing.

If you want an extra freshness and crispness, you can always place the cream puffs in the fridge. When it is cold, it feels more like you are having cold and sweet dessert as the substitute of your cold and solid ice creams. Every time I buy the cream puffs as take away, I would always do this trick and everyone simply loves the freshness and the chilly cream puffs that would make you go 'wow'.

limited varieties but the eclairs are worth a try

For a small snack or dessert, Beard Papa offers a range of different flavoured puffs and desserts.

My favourite puffs would be the éclair that is filled with strawberry cream or the mango yoghurt puff. The entire puff and cream of the strawberry filled éclair is cold and the combination of dark chocolate and strawberry melts in my mouth. The mango yoghurt puff tastes like icecream biscuit, with small bits of mango in it. The puffs have a crunchy exterior and a soft interior. Most of the outlets are often sold out on strawberry cream and mango yoghurt puff though. The vanilla filled éclair is worth a try as well, but the chocolate filled éclair is too chocolatey and sweet. For the price difference between the plain puff and the chocolate-coated puff, it is more worthwhile to get the latter.

The puffs are affordable for a quick, sweet snack. There is rarely a queue at the various outlets, perhaps due to the limited range of choices as the more popular cream flavours are often out of stock.

Best cream puffs I've ever had

9 out of 10 times that i walk pass a beard papa kiosk, I would stop to buy a cream puff. It is that good. The cream puffs are light and fluffy on the outside and sprinkled with a thin layer of caster sugar . The best part of the cream puff however, is definitely the filling. The cream puff is only freshly stuffed with cream when the orders are made. The cream is light and milky, not cloyingly sweet like many other cream puffs. Right after you finish one you would still be craving another!

The original cream puff is much better than the chocolate flavored one as the chocolate tends to overpower the light cream filling. The cookie crust cream puff doesn't taste very different to me (thought it's slightly more expensive), so I always stick to the original.

Other worthy mentions would be the chocolate lava cake, which oozes rich chocolate when you get to the middle. The cheesecake is also very tasty. That said, both of these items on the menu come in very small portions.

It costs about $2 (or was it $2.20) for a cream puff, and it's definitely a 2bucks well spent. the cakes are more expensive but still worth the money. all the items on the menu that i've mentioned (except perhaps the choc lava cake) are grab-and-go, suitable for a quick snack.

best original cream puffs!

The cream puff I am reviewing here is the original cream puff which is vanilla-flavored. To date, I have only tried the original ones and let me tell you, there isn't even a need for flavored ones because the original ones are SO good!!! The choux puff is thin but not filmsy. It is adequately chewy and soft. The huge dollop of cream in the puff is not overwhelmingly sweet as well. You will enjoy every single bite of this puff! It's like the cream puff version of Provence's 'milk pan'. The cream is always kept chilled and it is so refreshing to bite into the cream puff. Although the cream is overly filled, it shows that they do not skimp on quantity. I love it. Love every single part of the choux pastry and milky cream.

At $2.80 for one, it isn't one of the cheapest puff around, in fact I don't think cream puffs are usually sold at this price. But hey! It is really worth the money! And it's not like it's $28. $2.80 for a good cream puff, why not? You have have have to try this if you ever walk past a store. I would even say it is worth a special trip down just to have the cream puffs! Service could be better though, but I don't care because it's usually just a stand by itself. Not a restaurant, So you just order, pay and go!
