Dime a dozen

When I go to Somerset, more often than not, I find myself heading straight towards the exit of [email protected] to go to other places such as The Centrepoint. Despite having the MRT station exit located within the mall, [email protected] has little to attract a diverse group of customers.

Shopping-wise, it houses many big-names such as Cotton-On, Forever 21, Uniqlo and ZARA. However, these are also found in many other places (even within Orchard, which is just a stone's throw away) - giving the place a 'just another one' vibe. With regards to food, one can expect to find a ridiculously-overpriced Food Republic on the top floor.

Food quality isn't fantastic either - I could spend perhaps the same amount and get better-tasting food at Burger King in Cathay Cineleisure. Marche is quite a good place to meetup with friends, but that's about it really.

Favourite shopping mall in town

[email protected] is my ultimate shopping destination and my favourite shopping mall; it has literally everything! The only thing 313 is missing is a movie theatre.

It's connected to Somerset MRT station so it's extremely convenient and it has all the stores I love to shop at like Forever 21, Cotton On, Zara and it's right next to the H&M building. The Forever 21 has a 4 floors so you can spend hours in there just exploring, and the Cotton On recently expanded and now has an extra floor. 313 also has a huge HMV, which is quite hard to find nowadays since many of the HMV stores closed down.

Two of the most popular coffee joints are also in 313 - Starbucks and Coffee Bean, and there is a little cafe on the 3rd floor called Blue Mountain Cafe which serves amazing pasta. If you're on a budget, head to the food hall on Basement 3 which has a wide selection of stalls.

I can't stop raving about 313; there's just so much to do there.

Typical Orchard Road Mall

313 Somerset is the kind of shopping mall which explains why I hate shopping in Orchard.

Its shops are mostly for branded goods which are overpriced. You can probably find the same brands at much cheaper prices at neighborhood malls or online.

Even the food there is expensive. A meal at the Food Republic joint will easily set you back by at least $7 which is high when you realize you can get the same food at $4 or less at a coffeeshop.

Still, such is the nature of shops and eateries in the Orchard area. Were it not for the fact that I work nearby, I would not come to 313 Somerset much. As it is, it is a good place to window shop and stroll around during the lunch break.

Bustling mall with lots of brand names and food options

While you can find major brand names like Zara for formal wear or Forever 21 for the more casual clothing, you can also shop for stuffs other than clothing at 313 such as quirky stationary from Sniggle or even Apple products from the Apple Store, both on the ground floor. Be warned though for 313 is also one of the malls which is mostly packed during the weekdays' evening and weekends.

What I do enjoy in 313 are actually the vast food options. There's a hoard of food which can be found at the basement and while there are also a variety of snacks available from the different stalls, 313 has also installed several shared tables and chairs for the diners for the ease of eating. While I do prefer to have even more tables/chairs since it might be hard to find a seat during the peak hours, the variety of other food options with their own seating allowed me to switch my mind and dine elsewhere anytime if I find it to be too packed here.

There's also a food court at the higher level (4th or 5th if I'm not wrong) and surprisingly, it's usually less packed compared to the basement. However, the food here are considered expensive for a food court standard (I've paid almost $7 for a mixed economical rice - less the economical factor I believe). My favorite here will be the Monster Curry, although costing to $10 or more for a meal easily, for their really spicy Japanese curry provides a different enjoyment from the normal sweet Japanese curry and it rather suits the locals' tastes, whom tend to enjoy spicy food a lot.

There's also a restaurant known as "Bao Jin Tian" outside 313, a supper haunt for me for they opened till 1am (if I remember correctly as well), providing relatively cheap dim sum for a healthy supper option.

You name it, they've got it.

[email protected] has an excellent mix of both F&B and shopping outlets. What's going to amaze you first would be my favourite, the 4 leveled Forever21 right at the main entrance. Where else would you able to find such a huge F21? Right from Level 1 to Level 4, the F21 in 313 has accessories and apparels of all kinds and variety where you're surely to find what you're looking for! Cotton On, Mango and Uniqlo are also relatively big with amazing selections of apparel available. 313 is also right next to the ever so popular H&M, so you can easily pop by to have a look.

The Basement Food Hall is also another of my favourite place! They have almost everything! Ice cream, froyo, sushi, salad and so on. You will not be disappointed. It is also a great place to have a meal to suit the taste of everyone you're with.

One of the best malls in town

[email protected] is one of the malls that my friends and I will always make point to visit whenever we hit the town. The mall houses various brands of apparels, ranging from British high street brand New Look, to the widely popular Forever 21, as well as Japanese casual brand Dip Drops, so there's a wide variety of casual clothing to choose from whenever I'm at 313.

Furthermore, 313 is a mere minute's walk away from H&M's flagship store, and is connected to Somerset MRT Station, so 313 is definitely in a prime location, which would probably explain the throngs of people that crowd the mall during the weekends.

[email protected] is a food haven as well! There are several cuisines available at 313, so shoppers will definitely be spoilt for choice when contemplating their lunch or dinner options. My personal favourite restaurant in 313 would be Marshe. The queue can get a little crazy during weekends and Friday nights, so I would recommend going to the restaurant at an earlier time. There are also several cafes at 313, so friends can simply get together with a cup of coffee and relax as well!

If not for Marche

The only reason why I would hang around 313 is Marche. Other than that, I would consider 313 as a mall that happens to be connected to Somerset MRT station. The existence of the mall actually makes it a convenient stop but the kinds of shops they have there is not exactly the kinds of shops that I would be visiting.

The exception would be Marche. It is a fantastic place to go to for food and drinks, though the price is pretty steep. The decor makes it a pretty comfortable place to casually dine in and there are enough corners quiet enough for me to have a meeting with clients over food and drinks.

Compared to the time Marche was at The Hereen, I prefer the current location much more.

My favourite mall in town!

What I really like about [email protected] is that it offers so much at affordable prices! Apparel shops like New Look, Forever 21 and Cotton On offers youngsters trendy clothes which are reasonably priced. One could spend days shopping at 313 due to the sheer size of the mall. Moreover, 313 is located right next to H&M! What more could you ask for!

Another part of 313 that puts it above other malls is the array of food and beverages available, from fine dining to cheap finger food. I especially like the basement floor where there is a common sitting area and several little stores. It gives me a relatively cheaper meal option, and I could have lunch which costs less than $5! Unlike other malls in town such as ION, 313 allows me to save up on meals, which I really appreciate.

Shop till you drop!

Almost always, there won't be enough time to shop. Many of the stores here are so huge it consumes time to go through the whole place. Once, I went to New Look and stayed here for two hours just browsing and trying on shoes. It still wasn't enough apparently, as I returned again with my friends to browse some more and try more shoes! Then there's Forever 21 and Cotton On, similar thing happened. How can anyone not resist spending the whole day at F21 and yearn to return again sometime?

With so much shopping to do, I didn't pay much attention to the myriad of eateries available. The only thing that caught my eye was the Charlie Brown cafe because well, it's Charlie Brown! I've never been there but I hope to some day.
