Dull inner similar to the outer look of the place
The first time I had actually heard of this place was when I was in Primary school pursuing the art of Fencing. My fencing school had a small outlet here and my school would frequently bring us to this outlet to practice sparring with one another.
On the outside, the place looks a little run down and small. It projects an image of a rather boring mall. However, there are food stalls that are lined up outside of this place which allows one a choice of one's pick of food from anything western to chinese. Upon entering, the front seems to propagate the inner look of the place - it is almost empty, has dull walls and small, narrow escalators leading downwards. Most of the shops here are mainly educators, with the exception of a few cafes at the basement floor which seem to be cosy and quiet because of the location. Not a place I would frequent regularly if I had the chance due to the location as well.
I just dropped by Balmoral Plaza today, and to be honest, I don't thing I'm going back. The building itself is pretty uninviting and looks a tad old-fashioned.
Perhaps the only shops worth a look there are Spizza, Waffletown and Oblong Ice Cream. Other than that, there really isn't much to look at, besides convenience stores and tuition centres. One plus point though - I checked out Oblong Ice Cream, and it is relatively quiet as there are not many patrons, so its a really good place for studying sessions!
Balmoral Plaza is also not very accessible. The nearest MRT station is Newton, but a little walking is needed to get there. Perhaps a better option would be by bus, but honestly, there's nothing special to see here.
Stagnant and rather uninviting
Although Balmoral Plaza is a mere 10 minute walk from my school, I rarely frequent it - why visit Balmoral Plaza when Orchard road and Newton Food Centre are nearby?
While Balmoral Plaza has quite a few food stores, I usually go to Waffletown and Spizza, if I ever even visit the building. This is because the other food either isn't excellent or is not priced for students. The facade of the building is also rather uninviting, which puts me off visiting the area even further.
However, while Balmoral Plaza is a rather inconvenient place to visit, it does house Spizza, which sells affordable and good Italian food - so if you're looking for good Italian food around the Newton area, Balmoral Plaza would be a good place to visit.
quiet, not particularly interesting to shop in
I visited Balmoral Plaza to check out some tuition centres, and thought that it would be good to look around the place since I was there already.
Even though I visited on a weekend, the place was really quiet, with few people patronizing the shops. It appeared as though a significant number of the people there were there for the same reason as I was - the tuition centres. The small variety of shops, relative age of the place and lack of any distinctive shopping experience to offer probably contributed to the low human traffic.
There are a few cafes and restaurants there that look like they would be worth a try, such as Waffletown USA and Spizza. However unless you live nearby and would like to drop by for the convenience stores and the occasional meal, I wouldn't go out of my way to visit this mall again.
